that some boards hold SLs & characters to such realistic standards??? btw, i don't find this here at all lol.
why do they get all torked b/c tad hasn't *been held accountable* or they don't like sonny/carly's parenting, or babe & krystal are considered so immoral but JR is forgiven much??
i mean come on. this is entertainment! isn't the fun supposed to be that characters get away w/things we never would in RL? they complain that kids are not seen enough but if they were they'd be complaining that the kids are boring.
people go to prison....for oh a nanosecond. they complain, but if they weren't seeing their favs they would complain about that as well.
i guess i don't understand why people can't just relax & enjoy it for what it is....entertainment.
....and yes, things are nasty on SOC rofl.

Hey, Kris! I know exactly how you feel about this, because the problem has truly gotten out of hand, even at SOC. Many posters are far too involved in the stories, have far too much emotional stake in the characters and identify strongly with the actors and their characters. It's a very unhealthy state to be in.
It was fun when, about a year ago, when all of us here were posting together at SOC, because there was always a very light-hearted hand in talking about the happenings on the TV show. Nobody got seriously involved, really. Do you remember the day somebody posted a picture of Paul Satterfield in the yellow speedo? We all laughed and joked like crazy, but it was all in good fun! Nowadays, it's all about "fanbase" wars and people actually identifying themselves as a "Jovanner" or a "Craver".
To label oneself as a member of a fanbase is a serious encroachment on mental stability, unless you're a young kid, and teens can do this, especially with music. I have no idea how old these posters are, but I assume that they are very young. It's one thing to enjoy a particular couple, quite another to call oneself a "Tangeline".
To a certain degree, I blame administrators of boards that become infested like that. Fan boards are out there for those that need to have a strong attachment to their favourites. Keep the nutcases in their own world, and ban the weird fanatics. We don't attract that sort of nutiiness here because none of us would put up with it. A newcomer with an agenda would have a seriously difficult time engaging any other member here in that kind of "conversation".
Kris, I definitely think that there are individuals who take the soaps to seriously, and forget that this is supposed to be entertainment, not guidelines for how to raise the perfect child, and be in the perfect relationship.
My take on soaps is that they always tend to take certain things to extremes, although the extreme boredom I feel with the ABC soaps is an extreme I had hoped never to see!
Some posters need to go take a walk around the block, and clear their heads!!! Seriously...
KaeEll, I think that a lot of the fanatics are on the younger side, although I'm afraid that this doesn't apply to all. I can think of a few posters, off the top of my head, who are always running the same agenda, and aren't really all that young.
Makes me shake my head.

I havent been to SOC in so long. I go to the Desperate Housewives part just to see when we will finally get a new show and to check for spoilers, but thats about it
ICAM, kae. they are way overboard on SOC...and other forums. i still read on SOC & post occassionally, but not often. everything is so negative & i can't remember the last time i read a post that was remotely fun.

Kris, I still read at SOC from time to time. looking for any old friends, but they're all gone. Often I have to get out of there because what I read turns my stomach. SOCs OLTL forum has become a fan board, whether the admin there recognises it or not.
I think that it's sometimes okay to try and hold soap characters to real life standards but you ultimately have to realize that it's a drama and there has to be a lot room for human errors because it's a fantasy zone. Honestly, half these people would be dead or behind bars for all the various things they've done in a real life setting. But they run about as if half their crimes never happened. So we let things go.
Let me give you a non-soap example. Professional wrestling and in this case we'll take the Rock. When he first started everyone loved him and then they became bored by his "blue chipper" personality then he began the Rock persona and everyone hated him because he slammed on the fans and now once again we all love him as the funny, wise-cracking guy.
The point here is there is one key element you have to take and be willing to use when watching wrestling, soaps, even dramas on during the even, heck even with movies too. It's called: WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF. It's a big time phrase sure, but it's true. If you can't get past trying to throw reality rules on whatever you're watching, then you're never going to enjoy it. And you're probably going to be bitching about it a lot. But then again a lot of these folks are probably overanalyzing everything else in their lives too.
Sure soaps, wrestling, movies and what not can be utterly ridiculous. And we should hold some standards to them or else we'd up with all the shows looking like Passions. But the best thing to do with those folks that can't stop overanalyzing.... ignore 'em. Because all they'll do is overanalyze your thoughts and leave you wondering how a person like that hasn't had a stroke or an ulcer by now.

i agree bran....you have to be willing to suspend your belief systems or there is just no enjoyment in watching/posting.
on a non~soap board i'm on they do a grey's anatomy thread. there is one poster who compares every character & their every move to real life....specifically hers rofl. i find this such a kill joy!
yes, SOC is bloody aweful. everyone is so negative. i go to see what people are saying b/c sometime a good point will be made & then get lost in the fanbase crap that is so overwhelming there. i never go to the abc boards b/c they are ugly beyond belief.
the majority of my posting takes place here & one other soap site that has morphed a number of times but remains a safe & comfortable place for me.

Well, I've visited SOC a couple of times lately and haven't really found the "good times" that were once there. I still like it there because of a few of the posters, it's just my experience moderating there really soured the whole experience for me at SOC. And a big ole YES to the thought that some viewers take the soaps WAY to seriously.
