another serious issue

Recently I saw in the news an apology for slavery given by (I think) Alabama. I don't know how someone who is alive today can apologize for something that happened 150 years ago. My ancestors came from Europe 3 decades after the civil war.

So should someone be apologizing or not?

I suppose the government could be responsible for apologizing. I dont think that any one person could be held responsible for it, I imagine a lot of people feel terrible for what their ancestors did and feel the need to apologize for it. I wont knock em for it...though I wish we were smarter as people back then to know that it was wrong.

Slavery was not just an American thing, and yet it's such a huge issue! The word slavery comes from Slavic because originally there were alot of slavic peoples that were sold as slaves. And of course the Bible has stories of slavery as well. I think our country needs to do something to move past this mistake as we clearly learned from it. And many white Americans fought against it in the Civil War and lost their lives to bring freedom to the Africans. Seems that part is forgotten

It upsets me to think that an entire state of people are apologizing for something they did not do to a group of people that were not ever actually slaves.

I totally agree with all that you say...I think that more then the slavery the state of Alabama should apologize for their role in how African-Americans were treated after the war...and everything leading up to the Civil Rights movements. I guess they shouldnt apologize for slavery, not all slaves suffered..in fact some of them were treated really well.

The Civil Rights stuff is where I think apologies should come from, not the actual slavery

slavery was a tragic period of time in our history, but it is just that.....history. no apologies required nor is it justification for continued bitterness. the AA community has had 150 years to move forward. every ethnic groups had it tough when they first hit ellis island, but it is up to the individual to make the most of his life.
