Last night, shortly after we had finished the main course of our barbecue dinner, my son went into the kitchen and yelled out "hey, I smell natural gas!!". So I called the emergency number of the gas company and they said to get out of the house, open doors and windows, send home any guests, don't turn anything on or off, no phone or computer, anything that could create a spark, and wait for the emergency team to arrive. So we did.
An hour later, the guy had checked everything thoroughly and shut off the culprit, the gas valve to my stove. It's a holiday Monday, so no stove cooking for me today. I'll call the appliance repair people tomorrow.
Anyway, we didn't get to dessert. My son scooped up his family and was gone in a shot, ditto my parents.
Now I know why the silver things in the kitchen have been tarnishing so quickly. As if that's more important than possibly geting blown up to kingdom come. My stove is a Magic Chef, by the way, a company owned by Kitchenaid. I had just paid $400 a few months ago to have the oven igniter replaced. Magic Chef - not a good brand.
Well good thing your kid found the smell before anything happened! By yeah, I do agree, Magic Chef sucks. I can't remember what one of their mini-appliances we had but it crapped out right quick too.
So nooooo Magic Chef for anyone on the board! Nope! Won't allow it! LOL

That's just flat-out scary. I'm SO glad that your son noticed the smell, and that you're all fine.
If I were you, I'd pull out that cheesecake, and eat the entire thing for breakfast. All by myself. After that kind of experience, you just need to savor the moments, and if it's cheesecake for breakfast, then so be it...!!!
YIKES, KaeEll.

Yes, it was an awful fright! Good suggestion for the cheesecake, Moore. It's calling me.... .
In a way, I feel kind of vindicated because I had suspected something was wrong because of the silver problem. I'd called the gas company several times asking questions about that and they continually told me that there was NO WAY that natural gas had enough sulphur in it to cause the kind of tarnishing we were experiencing. Yeah, right.
How scary! Thank goodness there was not an explosion. I can not even imagine how scary that must have been! I have electric appliances here, and after reading your story, I will keep electric appliances on my list of must haves when looking for my next home.
