I don't agree with the author. I do think better border control would help. Sure we can't get each and every one. but somewhere in our system a red flag should have gone off, like when he bought his gun.
It's like Oprah says that you get a whisper, then a thump, then a knock on the head. This is the knock on the head to our country that criminals are coming in as well as regular people and we have to be more careful now.
see I actually agree with him, simply because even if he was legal he probably would still be a criminal and he most likely would have still shot the cop. Montini was right, a cop was shot not long ago by an actual citizen.
And whose to say he bought the gun. He could have very likely stolen it. I dont think that immigration problems can be blamed for this mans death.
the bottom line issue is not that the man was illegal. he was a thug & a criminal. tina, how would he have popped up when he bought the gun? do you think he actually sought a licensed gun? of course not, he bought it from another thug on the streets.
i completely agree w/the author. the shooters legality is completely beside the point.

Him being Illegal is not the bottom line, but it should be factored in that he could have been prevented from entering this country to commit a crime here.
