nitpick of the day

Marcie said thank you to the cop for "looking out for Tommy and me"

Now wasn't she an English teacher, shouldn't she say "Tommy and I"

Marcie's grammar was correct. She could say "Tommy and I thank you, officer" because the pronoun is in the subject of the sentence. But when she says "Thank you for looking out for Tommy and me" the pronoun is in the predicate, therefore use of the nominative case would be incorrect.

Sorry, Tina, but you did ask, lol.

huh?

did you teach English?

I always thought the whole "me" thing was informal. And saying "I" was just proper.

Well I'll just assume your right, I have no desire to look it up.

Yes, I taught grade 8 art and English.

There are many people in North America who were never given proper grammar lessons in schools during the 70's when some dang-fool nonsense about freedom of expression had schools drop formal grammar classes in favour of colloquialisms and improper usage became rampant.

I'd be happy to refer you to some websites on nominative and subjective pronoun cases, but you're not interested, lol.

Just think of it this way: Me am happy to know you. Me think me can talk good that way. Her isn't having any fun. Him asked out she best friend.

See - easy, lol. "I" is no more interchangeable with "me" than "she" is with "her".

good point. Well it must drive you crazy to read these boards. I know I'm really bad at run on sentences.

I was bad at English because I had a teacher that was about 92 years old and could care less if we learned.

Well I wouldn't say I was bad, just bored! weirdface.gif

I'm actually not too bad about grammar. At least I try...though I get irritated because I turn papers in to my English teacher and she puts commas and other marks where my grammar check didn't.

We really do learn something new about each other everyday. I never knew that Kae was an English teacher.

besides why do people always blame the characters for what & how they say things? the words are put in their mouths.

OH Tina I've always used a little hint to help me remember when "me" should be used. If were to switch it to the word "us" and it would make sense then use "me". Yeah, I can see that when typed out, this makes absolutely no sense. Well, I tried lol.

That IS a great little reminder, Jess. It's funny that people never have a problem with "us" and "we".
