Hey all, we havent done one of these whats up with everyone in a few days. So whats up with all of you? Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week. I am excited because my mom and sister will be here, but nervous because this is the first family dinner at our house. Will be fun but I am still digging up good recipes. We like to try new things every year. Esp with the sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes and marshmellows get old. And we like to try new cranberry recipes. I found a good pumpkin cheesecake recipe and am making it for the hubby's thanksgiving thing at work this friday. So thats cool.
This morning I'm waiting for the carpet cleaners to come pick up my bedroom rug (that'll be fun watching them move the bed off of it) and gardeners are here blowing and packimg up leaves, making a racket I could live without. This afternoon I'm having tea with a friend, then off to run some grocery errands.
Tonight we're supposed to go to the grand opening of the Ritz-Carlton (Trump's project) but I really don't want to go. It's some tree-lighting ceremony at the ceramics museum and it'll be all snotty and such. Uck. And besides, my hairdresser took out her frustrations with her L'Oreal distributor on my head and cut off way too much, so I feel frumpy and pissed off about that. I really don't like going to high-profile events any more at all. If my husband makes a big deal out of it, I'll have to bite the bullet and haul out the panty hose and heels, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll be too tired for it. And anyway, he drove a car downtown this morning, so the logistics for the evening would be complicated.
Shelly, I wish I could help you with that turkey dinner. I've done about a million of them, or it seems. Here's my yam recipe:
Boil up a few big ones, when cooked almost all through, remove and let cool, then peel and slice into rounds. Plop each layer with butter, ginger, cinnamon and brown sugar, bake at 325 for 45 minutes. I usually make them the day before and bake them while the turkey is resting on the counter, waiting to be carved. Don't ask me about the quantities, I just wing it. They're yummy.
I love to try new recipes, I buy those little recipe books at my grocery store. They sell them by the check out for the holidays and I usually find one thing to try
I hate the sweet potatoes with marshmallows, too sweet! I just bake them like regular potatoes, they are so healthy, I try to add them to our normal menu
I can't believe it's next week, but this year we are NOT cooking! Woo hoo.
I am making a great potato dish though. First you mash them, add cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and sour cream, then bake them! Everyone loved them!

I bet you can do something sleek and sassy with your new hair cut. Go out and have fun for the rest of us!!!
LOL, Tina. I don't do sleek and sassy, but thanks for the encouragement. It would be an obligatory outing, not a fun one. My idea of fun is hanging out with family and friends, not standing around balancing a glass of wine in one hand, some little sushi horror in the other and making small talk with strangers. I CAN do it, but it's draining. Blech.

I initially get nervous for stuff like that, but then find it's mostly fun. Except for wearing heels all night. I can't tolerate that anymore!
Kae if I could go for you I totally would. My husband is not so great about that. Though I swear over the next year I am going to lose enough weight and he is going to take me to the Navy Ball next year.
Ugh, Vinnie got us this huge bird feeder that holds like 4 different kinds of food and this darn squirrel just jumped onto it. I banged on the window and he fell off. Hopefully he stays down. I hate those darn things
Oh Shelly, I know how you feel about those squirrels! The only thing that has kept them out of the bird seeds is a squirrel feeder. It's a little salt-box shaped thing with a lid that is hinged at the back. We fill it with nuts, whatever is cheapest at the bulk food store, usually peanuts. The squirrels have to figure out how to open it and retrieve the peanuts, but when they do, it's busy!
I bought ours at a Birds Unlimited. Only down side is the clinking noise it makes when the lid falls back down. I think it was about $15 ten years ago.
well we didnt think that we would have a problem because we dont have a tree at our new house. But there is a railing along the sidewalk and thats how he jumped on it. We had one of those feeders that you just put the ear of corn on but like I said we dont have a tree to nail it on. Argh, I cant believe I used to like the little monsters.
There is a dove sitting up there now, not the pretty bird we were hoping for but still better then the squirrel
We don't nail ours up to a tree, just set it on the picnic table. That way I can wash it out from time to time, not that the squirrels would care one way or the other. But it's amazing that the little buggers don't bother with the birds' food now.
Just don't get me started on chipmunks..... .
Hey, Jess, I know you're fond of the little squirrelly-girls. Ever had one in your house? Now that's a story, lol.
I think they sell bird feeders that are squirrel proof
I still kind of like squirrels, but we don't get them here. Our trees are like twigs. I do have a bird feeder on our one tree. It's kind of a joke, the feeder looks like it will make the tree topple over!
Both of our feeders are on poles. We had a feeder that was squirrel proof but the birds didnt seem to like it much, they also make seed that squirrels dont like but again the birds dont seem to like it much. The squirrel hasnt tried to make it onto the feeder. I think he discovered after he jumped on it that it wasnt very sturdy. They are made for finches. So not much weight.
Kae I hear ya about chipmunks. My in laws actually shoot them when they get too out of hand. They are such distructove little creatures.
They really are destructive and very territorial too. We have some that have set up shop in the garage inside a box of styrofoam peanuts. I wouldn't go so far as to shoot them, but if it weren't illegal, I'd trap them and drive them out to the countryside and let them go. But then we'd probably get more moving in. I hear that chipmunks email their cousins when a vacancy opens up in town.
yeah, my in laws live in the middle of a lot of land. Mostly forest so there really isnt anywhere else to take them. I dont usually advocate killing them but when they destroy so much sometimes you have to. And there really are SO many of the little buggers.
Hey everyone! Just another day for me at the office. Work has been insane. I went through my first round of architectural committee review on my technical design. The sucker is 106 pages. It went extremely well, thank goodness! I have another meeting on Thursday to go through the rest.
Work is fun and challenging. Tomorrow is literally back-to-back meetings. I am now in count down for my trip to my parents house. I leave a week from tomorrow, Wednesday. I am getting really psyched! It is going to be insane trying to get to the airport, with my traveling on the busiest day of the year. My flight leaves Logan Airport at 7:15 pm, and I have the airport limo picking me up at 1:30, for the 50 mile drive. Getting into Boston is a definite challenge. I am taking my work laptop with me, so I can work on the way to the airport, and on the flight home. I am not touching the thing while I am in Ireland, and I am going to try to sleep on the flight over there.
I will arrive in Ireland at 6 am, their time, 1 am my time, so I really need to sleep, otherwise the first day is a wash with the time change, no sleep and jet lag.
Anyway, I hope that everyone is doing well, and I love feeding comments. We have tons of chipmunks around here. They are forever burrowing holes around the yard, and I believe their is an entire colony of them out in my stone wall. I love to watch them running around. So does the cat, it torments her, she spends hours sitting in my bay window watching in amazement....
