I kind of stole this from a friend, thought you guys might find it interesting. I have a question in there somewhere
Native Candian William ("Wil") deVry wears famous genes. His great-grandfather, Herman DeVry, founded the reknowned DeVry Institute and his maternal grandmother held 26 world records in track and field. While following in the latter's footsteps appealed to Wil - he dreamt of playing for MLB's Montral Expos - it was not to be. It is in acting that Wil has made a name for himself. While roles on Steven Speilberg's StarQuest DSV, his first major role, and subsequent parts on The Outer Limits and Stargate SG-1, amongst others, made him a known commodity in the male dominated sci-fi community, it was later roles on Port Charles, All My Children, and most currently the Bold and Beautiful that have endeared him to hordes of females. Wil is appreciative of you, his fans, and took time to do a Q & A with AMC Fan Space.
Do you miss playing Michael Cambias, and the cast of AMC? Eva (Toms River, New Jersey)
Yes I do miss playing him. I had so much fun working on such great material and I miss that part of it. I miss all my friends over there too, especially now that Rebecca Budig is back.
What did you enjoy most about playing the character Michael Cambias? Kathy Raye (Sheffield, Alabama)
You never knew what to expect from him. He would always surprise me with new twists and turns. Too bad they sort of wrote him into a corner. It's always so much fun to be the character everyone hates.
Did you enjoy working with Eden? Rachel (Roseville, Michigan)
I loved working with Eden. She is such a professional and always a pleasure. We became pretty good friends there for a bit.
What is it like behind the scenes at AMC? Jason (Redondo Beach, California)
Believe it or not, it's just like going to work for you probably. I would just go to work, be professional and try to have a good time.
It seems that All My Children brings ghosts back to life quite often. Do you think Michael Cambias will ever be resurrected? Kathy (Rockford, Illinois)
Well now that Angie and Jesse are back, I don't know. I had a conversation with Brian Frons the other day and we laughed at the idea of having so many people back from the dead on the show.
Wil, how different is it working on B&B than working on AMC? Gloria (Bristol, Tenessee)
There is a few things. One, the hours on B&B are shorter. Smaller cast. Shorters EPS. Less material for everyone at B&B, you never know when you will get material to work on. I do miss NYC a lot, but I love the sun in California.
How is it different working on the set of B&B compared to AMC in regards to creative input and working relationships? And, what is it like working with two of daytime's biggest divas, Susan Lucci and Katherine Kelly Lang? Tammy (Georgia)
As far as creative input, I don't think anyone except the top star or two on the show have any. (As far as the casts) I love everyone on AMC and B&B. You develop a comfort level with everyone you work with wherever you are in your career. Susan and Katherine are long time stars for a reason - they both rock.
Both Storm and Michael Cambias have issues regarding their fathers, and the relationship that they had with them. I know that just recently, your character has been rebuilding his relationship with Stephen. Would you like to have had Michael rebuild the family ties before he was killed on AMC, or do you think that Michael was just a monster with no soul or conscious? Janine (Port Richey, Florida)
Oh, I think everyone wants to be loved. If Michael was only a one trick pony it would have been no fun to play him. But sure, over the course of a couple of years, it would have been fun to rebuild the trust and love of the relationship between Michael and his dad. Gosh, you watch both shows??!!
Is Storm going to stick around the Bold and the Beautiful or are you going to be written out per story? I would love to see the male Logan stick around. How different is it working with Susan Flannery then it was working with Susan Lucci? I love watching you as Storm. Shelly (Phoenix, Arizona)
Thanks Shelly. I really have no idea how much longer Storm will be around, but I hope it's awhile. I think there is a lot of potential for the character. And I agree that we do need a male Logan around. I think my problem is that I play "bad" too well. I hope I haven't opened any doors or given them any ideas how to kill the character.
How did you feel about Michael being portrayed as a rapist on the show? Amy (Tilbury, Ontario)
I think any real person who commits such acts should be sent off to prison forever, but it's a tv show and not every character can be an angel or a role model in daytime. You need these characters to feed off of. This is drama, not real life. The problem is that it's almost always the end of the character and that is no fun at all.
What kind of preparations go into getting yourself ready for scenes where you have to be an evil character (i.e. the rape scene with Eden)? Kelly (Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey)
I spent a lot of time doing my homework, making him interesting and not one note. You mostly have to give yourself permission to be that person. (However, while) it seems that Michael was all bad, if you look at the performances you see/notice little nuances that make you question if Michael is all bad.
A few questions: 1) Which role that you have played has been your favorite, and which did you find most challenging? 2) If AMC would like to bring Michael Cambias back from the grave, would you ever consider returning? And how do you think TPTB would explain your survival? 3) Your great-grandfather, Herman DeVry left behind a legacy through his family and the DeVry Institute, now the DeVry University. What kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind? How would you like to be remembered? Have a great day! Jenn (Gainesville, Florida)
1) My favorite role to date has been both Michael Cambias and my role on Beggars And Choosers. Giving myself permission to play Michael Cambias was the most trying. 2) I don't think Michael can come back. He would have to be a lookalike or a brother. Or be the "REAL" Michael Cambias. The first one being an imposter. 3) As for the third question, that I did the best I could with the opportunities given me.
Wow, your handsome! I liked your character on AMC. I usually wind up getting attached to the villains in PV (Michael C, Vanessa, etc). QUESTION(s): Are you ever afraid that you will be typecast, or pigeonholed in one type of role? Is there any aspect of a role you did that you've had issues with or strong feelings against? "Soul Caliber" (Jersey City, New Jersey)
Believe it or not - smoking. I'm sort of against smoking, but as I evolve as an actor, I see that as just another tool for a character I might be trying to play. So at this point I would say "no", I don't have any issues with being asked to do anything. And, I love being a bad guy, so no, I am not afraid of being pigeonholed, just losing my job!!
Growing up in Montreal, Canada, is French your first language? Also, you spent some time in Guinea, Africa. What took you there, and what was it like. Janelle (Norfolk, East United Kingdom)
I was so young in Africa that I don't remember a whole lot. I just remember I was the only white kid around. My blonde hair stuck out like a sore thumb!! But the memories I do have of being there I am very fond of. My dad was offered a position as an international lawyer for a mining company, so we went off for three years. For a long time French was my first language but I really don't speak it any more and I'm starting to realize that I am losing it slowly.
I would personally like to thank my friend Nora for organizing this Q & A and for Wil allowing this opportunity. Fans of Wil can check out my official myspace at: http:www.myspace.com/williamdevry
