Its Thursday

So how is everyone doing. I am at work for my third 10 hour day this week. Holidays are great and all but I sure will be glad when I am finally getting paid for them. Though I must say that with how tired I am I sure have been getting good sleep this week. Vinnie's alarm went off this morning and I didn't even hear it. Thats pretty good.

Work here is slow, but I guess its okay. Its still work I suppose

I do wonder where Brandon is. Seems that we know where most everyone is, Sophia is most likely working her tail off, Jess is busy with work and new house, Jodi comes in at night to say hi...But where is Brandon. Did he have too hard of a birthday???

Shelly, you and Tess are both working too hard!

I saw that Brandon was on a little earlier, but didn't post anything. Maybe he's still deeply involved in his hunt for a different job. (Keeping all fingers and toes crossed for him.)

Jim and I watched the Convention last night, and were very impressed by Sarah Palin. Jim hadn't seen her first speech, so he was even more surprised than I was by how well she handled herself. The woman takes no prisoners, that's for sure! She's smart, feisty, and quite relaxed behind a microphone. Many of her remarks will have appeal to both political parties (kids with special needs), and certainly to conservative midddle class families on both sides of the fence.

This should be a very interesting race, over the next few months. I'm very much looking forward to the debates as I am still undecided.

It's going to be very hot and sticky here. I'm grateful that we had those few fall-like days. Jim is taking the day off, and I'm still working on stuff for Saturday, and will be glad when it's over. I really DO need to learn not to come up with these "bright ideas" to promote the club which, when my own self-imposed deadline begins looming, always causes me to ask myself, "what was I thinking...!??!"

I liked what Sarah had to say too. I can tell you that everyone at church last night was all in a very big hurry to get home to watch her. She is a big hit with the very large anti-abortion pro-birth church crowd. I am happy to hear that your husband liked her, he seems like someone who's opinion I would like to listen to.

I don't know if it is hot or anything. I know that everyone here seems paranoid about the hurricanes heading up the coast. I have never been in a hurricane and can't imagine that the North east could handle one well since we are so condensed here. So hopefully we only get the after math and the rain. I am a full believer that we can always use the rain. But I work in a little cave almost so I don't see the outside unless I get up and physically go outside.

I think that there are a lot of scientists in my building. I think that's cool, thankfully I don't think that any of the animal labs are here though. I think I would be sad always if they were.

And moore I really don't work that hard, and I don't have to do the extra 2 hours a day, but I kind of want to get paid for them. I like money, haha.

BTW, anyone have a good seafood salad for my sandwiches this weekend.

I'm still here. Didn't get that other job because there was a more qualified candidate but they're looking at me for future openings, yeah for me.

Been a little sick past couple of days, otherwise been doing okay.

Shelly, I think with seafood, it's best to stay simple, and allow the seafood flavor to come through. Certainly both shrimp and crab are good choices, and I would season them very lightly with a little Old Bay (not much), or some Cajun spices. Again, not much. Mix whatever you're using with some mayo, and a little lemon juice, and perhaps some chopped scallions for some mild onion crunch, if you like them.

Oh Brandon, we're SO glad to see you! You're our guy, and always such a great balance to all the ladies...

I'm so sorry about the job. Please don't let it discourage you because you're going to find the right match, and maybe when you're not even looking for it. That's the way these things tend to happen sometimes.

Glad you're feeling better.

Quick hi, gals. Y&R will be on in a minute and I HAVE to watch it, lol. We liked Sarah Palin too, but I am getting a little sated with politics, especially after enduring 2 weeks of Ted's Olympics obsession. There's going to be an October federal election up here. Gah. More of it.

Hey, Brandon! Get better soon, okay? Here's a nice cuppa tea for you, cookies on the side.

Brandon, so nice to see you on here. Sorry to hear about the job, that just means that there is another one that is better out there some where. And I hope you get to feeling better. Did you eat too much junk on your birthday?

About the seafood salad, I think I am going to go with an artificial crab because 1 its cheaper and 2 its pretty. And then I guess I will go with a little bit of shrimp. I really need to get to the store.

And YAH for Y&R, it really is getting to be very good

Well, I've barely recovered from my disappointment over Y&R's pre-empted status today, lol.

Brandon, again, the very best of luck with the job search. When he right one comes along, we'll have to celebrate with you. It WILL come....

Love Old Bay in crab and pollack, and Moore is so right - be sparing or it'll whack the heck out of the subtle flavours of the fish. I made that mistake before. :)

I wonder how Jess is doing with work and the new house and all. Has anyone talked to her lately?

I think I may step out and send her a text and ask her to pop in just to say hello should she get the chance.

So here is my sad thought of the day, as if the thought of a Friday less Y&R isn't bad enough. I mean good grief that is the cliffhanger day. But my good friend James' dad has long suffered from Lou Gehrig disease and finally passed away yesterday. I was thinking that I don't know whats worse, when we lose loved ones very suddenly or when they linger like that. I mean you almost want to be relieved that this poor man is no longer suffering, but its still very sad altogether.

So yeah, that is my thought. Its so sad because our church had this beautiful baby born one day and then the day after someone dies. Weird when it happens that way.

Back to the seafood for a moment, Shelly -- this is also a good opportunity to add a few of those capers that KaeEll uses in her potato salad. They go well with shrimp, but taste a small portion to see if you like it that way.

Another alternative might be to make one of the salads with a bit of curry. Again, this goes especially well with shrimp. Put some curry powder in the mayo, some of those chopped scallions, and a little bottled chutney (Major Grey), chopped.

This would give people two choices: the more traditional flavors of Old Bay and lemon with the imitation crab, and the curried shrimp.

Just a thought...

I'm so sorry about your friend. It's never easy to lose someone, even if you know it's inevitable. You're right about the cycle of life, and how one day there's celebration, and the next day sadness. Sometimes on the same day. In 1995, one of my sister's very best friends died (we knew it was coming), and I had to inform another one of the still-surviving best friends. A few hours later, my youngest nephew had his first daughter, so I went from grief to celebration, and both events were related to my sister.

I told her other girlfriend that my sister must have been a very busy angel that day, flying from her friend's bedside in Virginia to the birth of her first grandchild, outside of Seattle! Very tired wings...

So sorry about your friend's father, Shelly. Life is so full of sadness and celebrations, sometimes all muddled up together. That's one good reason alone to keep this little haven of ours here free from the kind of negativity and trouble-making that life outside will bring to us without the asking, non?

Hugs for your friend, Shelly.

Yay for busy angels too.

Oh yum - curried shrimp. Good idea.

BTW, on Monday we served, along with steak and chicken, pork tenderloin marinated in that balsamic fig maple sauce and it was a total dud! No one had any of it. You win some, you lose some, lol.

Will the curried shrimp go well on pumpernickel bread. Because i thought I might toast some of that up. I may even find small circle cookie cutters and make mini-sandwiches out of them.

Oh, I forgot to say. I was just over at SOC and was reading the posts that Dan puts up. I have to say that I love when he does that. When he invites opinions from all of the soaps.

Shelly, I don't see any reason why the curried shrimp couldn't go on pumpernickel. Rye wouldn't work, though... In fact, you could make life really easy on yourself, and buy a package of those tiny pumpernickel slices (do you know the ones I mean?), and put the curried shrimp on top, as an open-face sandwich, but more h'ors d'oeuvres size. You could VERY LIGHTLY toast one side, if you wanted to, to prevent the shrimp salad from making that side soggy...

I love it when Dan jumps in, and posts stuff too. I always feel sorry for him when he isn't participating because he started the board, out of interest in AMC, and now is so overwhelmed with the administration aspect of it that he rarely has time to "play". I think that his separate section, "In The Bubble With Dan J. Kroll" is a great idea. That way, he doesn't have to try to hop from board to board.

KaeEll, you're right about trying to predict what's going to work, and what won't. That's too bad about the pork... That's happened to me too, and I've seen it happen to others when it comes to potluck. Often the dish looks good, but there's just too much else to eat, and the neglected dish might be too similar to another one. At least you got a lot of leftovers from the experience!

I agree with you that this is always a great place to come, to exchange recipes, and to talk about what's currently going on in our lives. It would be interesting to go back and read all of the posts, just to see what changes have occurred, and how much better we've all gotten to know each other over the course of two years-plus.

The miniature sandwich idea sounds really good. I may have to look around for that kind of bread. I guess I could do some kind of a sourdough type bread too. Which would be better?

The mini pumpernickel that I'm talking about is often found in the deli section, although it's sometimes found in the bread section too. It depends on the store. I can't remember the brand... They're wrapped in clear plastic, and create a tube shape because they're roundish, and of course are stacked together. If I can think of the brand, I'll let you know so that you can ask for it.

I'm not sure about the sourdough. I think that you don't want too many different flavors to interfere with the seafood itself.

Good morning darlings!!! Ugh!!! My head is killing me. I think it's sinuses. Who knows. I started my overnights last week. I like it so far. I just hope and pray that I can keep the shift long term.

Anywho. My weekend was so busy and such a blur. I didn't even ge to sleep but maybe 8 hours from Thursday to Monday. Every year we have the Labor Day picnic in my home town which is about a 45 minute drive from the new house. Well, last year we put Bethany in the little miss pageant and apparently she had a blast because she asked to do it again this year. So, Thrusday I was off and took her to practice in my home town. Didn't get back until late of course. Luckily though after the practice we stopped by my aunt's who had the cutest dress for Bethany for the pageant .. get this .. the dress had been in her friend's trunk on it's way to the salvation army. She hadn't even thought of asking until my little cousin mentioned it. SO they got it cleaned and ready for us all within an hour.

Then Friday .. omg Friday! Friday was the pageant and payday and I had worked till 5 am the day prior. The plan was for me to sleep in while hubby went to work and did all that good stuff. Well he can't do anything without being super fraking loud So I got pissy and told him I'd just take him to work so I could get my check. So of course he couldn't do that in a timely manner so I had to pick it up after I dropped him off. By that time I was so awake taht I decided to hit up starbucks and just start the day. I took the kids to walmart to get a few odds and ends and luckily found the perfect shoes for Beth. After that we finally came home and relaxed ... still no sleep though. Turned around and ran to pick hubby up at 12:30 because he took a half day for the pageant. We picked him up, deposited his check and ran home for lunch. Cody got home from school and it was time to clean all the kids up and get ready to go get Beth's hair dolled up.

I made an appointment for her with my stylist who lives in our old town .. not far from where the picnic is so it works out very well. So we got there right on time because my phone decided to hide from me .. found it in my daughter's room. We got her hair done and got her dressed and looking darling and then we had Aiden's hair cut, and left directly for the park and to the picnic. Those things are always such a long drawn out process becuase they do a beautiful baby contest first and insist that the little girls and boys be there for that. Anywho .. Beth did so well. i was so proud she looked like a little princess. She even got 2nd runner up which is major because there were so many little girls and a lot of them were older than she is. Last year it was only the older girls who did any good. i have so many pics to upload. Anyways after all the excitement we got a bit and had to head home because I was still supposed to go to work.

I was only planning to work 2 hours and using some of my flex time, but when I got there they offered to let me work a whole shift and not use any time. I happily accepted and worked 10pm - 7 am. Which was fine until I got a text from Floyd at 6 telling me that he couldn't find the car keys to come get me. We were planning on having a nice breakfast out when I got off of work then I could come home and chill. ... Let's just say that didn't happen. I got off at 7 and he still wasn't there. Luckily for me one of the leads got off at 8 and took me home. I walked in and less than 3 minutes later I found the keys in Bethany's room. I pretty much told hubby not to look at me talk to me whatever because I was going to bed because we had to be up and in Mt. Olive (an hour drive) by about 2. I passed out cold lol. At about 12 ish I was woke up by hubby who told me to hand him my phone which was on my pillow. I bout killed him because well .. his lazy bum could've done it .. but that was his way of trying to surprise me because on the pillow was the, "i'm sorry I'm a dumbass and couldn't find the keys so left you stranded at work" necklace he had bought me. He also had breakfast in bed ready for me.

Anywho after kinda forgiving him (hey I can't just let him off that easy) we were on the road again. The birthday party was great. My cousin had devised a little carnival birthday party. Made the cutest cupcakes that looked like popcorn, got a bouncy thing, her brother dressed up as a clown .. it was really nice. We didn't stay too entirely long though becuase everyone was pooped. We still had to get groceries and everything. So when we got back to town we did that b ut no one wanted to cook .. thank goodness we have so many delivery places in town.

Sunday was another mad dash becuase Bethany had to be in the parade for getting 2nd runner up. We were late for church because I finally got to get some sleep and I just died lol. He didn't have the heart to wake me up. So we took her dress with us and got her all prettied up at church. Had to grab a new pair of socks because not only had hubby misplaced the keys that night he'd also misplaced a sock. So yeah .. we got to the parade. The kids had a blast. Hubby had to get one last load of stuff from storage to take to the new house so while he did that we stayed at my mom's and my stepdad took the older 2 kids and my brother to the picnic so they could ride a few rides. I stayed at home with mom and chilled out. When the kiddos got hom they swam Anywho .. I didn't even really get home for 5 minutes before i had to go back to work again.

Monday I worked over time and we just sat around the house and did absolutely nothing. It was divine!

My aunt got her tumbling studio opened!!! Bethany gets to take for free lol so Tuesdays we run down to the old town and take her to tumbling.

Whew .. so that was my weekend :)

GOOD HEAVENS!

Thanks so much for the update; you've had quite a time... Just reading about all of the driving, job commitments, pageant commitments, etc., was enough to make me want to lie down. LOL!

It's nice to see you here. It's been really quiet lately, with just a few of us posting.

Yeah, I kind of agree about the sour dough. I think like Peppridge Farm or something of that nature makes the bread you are talking of.

Just saw your post Jess...Good grief, if any of us has an excuse for being away you do. I think we all figured you were super busy with everything. Well its just been nice to hear from you, we all worry.

And I agree with moore, I think I want a nap too just from reading this.

Jessica!! You've been a busy gal and we've missed you. Thanks for the adorable pics of the kidneys - such cuties and as I've said so many times before, they look so much alike! Good strong genes!!

Pepperidge Farms is one brand of that mini bread, Shelly. It's all over the place and you shouldn't have trouble finding some. If they have the light versus the dark pumpernickel, I'd go light.

Moore, I love that idea of yours of reading OLD posts as a comparison to how we talk together today. That would be really interesting! I wonder if we babbled on about our personal lives back then too. (I'm quite sure that we must have, ALL of us, non?)

Hey all!

Nice to see you Jess! Great pictures! You've been a busy bee!

Aw, Bran, I'm so sorry you didn't get the job, darling. It obviously wasn't meant for you, and there is better one waiting for you out there.

I watched the convention last night too. I, unlike most, was very unimpressed by Sarah Palin.
Was she feisty? Sure. Great. But there were some things in her speech that bring about feelings of hypocrisy in me, especially centered around that "bridge to nowhere."
She doesn't appeal to me. I have a kids with special needs, but that's about all I can identify with.

I watched the convention tonight too. Unimpressed by McCain as well. He didn't say really much.

Jojo, we just finished watching McCain's speech, and I thought that it was a bit of a snore. Part of his problem (which he acknowledges) is that he's not a great speaker. Secondly, he repeated much of what we'd already seen in his introductory short film, and have heard about for years, regarding his heroism during the war. I'm very much awed by his bravery, truly awed, but how many times to we have to hear about it? Many, many more times, I imagine, before this campaign is over.

As for Sarah Palin, I thought that she did an amazing job, but I also think that a lot of what she said is going to be very closely examined. I'm already hearing a great deal of debate about the authenticity of some of her positions, and about how she has changed some of those positions only recently. There are a few things that disturb me too. She apparently thinks that global warming is a myth, and I don't know if this second thing is rumor or not, but I've heard that she was in favor of a certain amount of book banning in some of Alaska's libraries. School libraries, I think... Again, I don't know if that's been verified.

It should be an interesting race, if nothing else, and I'm going to be hanging onto every word of the debates!
