Aha, I wasn't aware Hannah had decided to go north.

Shelly, I'm in the same boat!

I've been working hard on my club's open house (scheduled for tomorrow), and many of "my ladies" have been working hard on it too. Hannah will probably strike in the morning. Depending upon what it does on it's way up the coast, we'll either get the hurricane itself, or heavy rain. Either way, the whole thing may end up being cancelled!

In the meantime, I have to continue to work on my stuff today because I don't know which way this is going to go yet. And, I was going to bake some cookies. Do I still do that??? I guess that I can always give them to my son. THAT'S what I'll do if we're cancelled!

I feel your pain. This kind of thing is so frustrating when you've put in so much thought, and effort into an event. Bought food, and everything... We have absolutely NO control over it though. Arghh!

Yeah, well hopefully things will go on for our luncheon. I mean it is inside the building. And I think you will get the most of it, we should just get remnants and rain. Though everyone is preparing for it. Jolene's daycare had the windows all taped up this morning. I was like so thats how you tape windows. I have no clue, weather disasters and Phoenix don't usually go hand in hand with each other. My only happiness right now is that Vinnie is not on a sub because all of them will be headed out to sea probably today.

Right now, I feel like I'm the one who has to make the decision on whether or not to close schools when snow is threatening to strike! I have to let everyone know whether we're going forward with this or not, and I have to make that decision today. The main core group of my club comes down from Baltimore, and the Columbia, MD area. I seriously doubt that they're going to want to drive through a hurricane, or even through a blinding rain. Likewise, I'm not too thrilled about driving from Virginia to Rockville, MD in those same conditions. Then, there's the question about how many members of the public will come, for those same reasons.

Oy.

If G Street decides to reschedule this whole thing for next weekend, I already have another commitment, and so do most of my ladies, since we're signed up to take a two-day class together.

G Street just opened at 10:00 a.m., so I'm going to shoot in a call to see what their plans are. I'm beginning to think that I ought to postpone this, and do something in October.

What a pain.

Shelly, I'm so glad that Vinnie is home, and doesn't have to think about heading out to sea with this mess on his heels. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your luncheon can go forward.

Ugh, I hate having to worry so much about rescheduling things.

BTW, I use to live right by Columbia, MD. I love that place

I made the executive decision late this afternoon, and cancelled our event. The ladies coming down from Columbia were going be in the middle of the storm, going back home...

I'm trying to reschedule.

These damn weather events!! I am so sorry for you ladies that worked so hard for the weekend festivities to have them dashed by a hurricane. I hope the alternative plans work well in the long run.

Moore, did you bake those cookies?

I didn't bake the cookies, KaeEll. We began to track the weather this morning, and by early afternoon, I was getting a bad feeling about the event tomorrow. I consulted with the ladies from Baltimore/Columbia, and they expressed their discomfort with the travelling. So, by 4:00 pm, I knew that there would be no cookie baking, although I certainly could have done it if the ladies had given me a different answer.

It's pouring rain, on and off now, and all weather reports are saying that we should get a downpour for about four to five hours tomorrow, at exactly the time when we were all supposed to have been in Rockville! I think we made the right call.

I'm rescheduling the bloody thing for Saturday, September 27th...

Shelly, I didn't know that you used to live in the Columbia area! I haven't been there in years, but everyone I've known who's lived there has liked it. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's a bit like Reston in Virginia. It's one of our earlier, planned communities in this area which included not just housing developments, but also schools, shopping, recreation, restaurants, parks, etc., etc. Everything all at once.

And then today the weather isn't so bad. Ugh. Its dreary here but nothing too bad. My sister in VA though said its awfully windy.

And yeah, I lived at Fort Meade just before I came to CT. That was before this board became more personal and less soapy.

Aw, Moore, that's a bummer. I'm sorry you to had to reschedule your event.

So, with the weather wreaking havoc over on the east coast, what's everyone up to today?
I think our summer might be gone. It's been cold and rainy all week. It's much warmer today, but still not sunny. I was going to go grocery shopping, but I like to go early, and I slept in a little, so I've decided I'll go in the morning. I'll just clean the apartment today!

We began the morning quietly, and it was actually rather cozy. Jim finished reading a book (Lady Macbeth that I had read earlier), and I played a seek-and-find computer game.

Unfortunately, we do have a little flooding in the basement, but it's not the massive amount that we've had in the past. It already seems to be slowing down a bit, but I just finished my turn with the shop-vac.

I guess it's time to get that patio ripped up, the bricks parged, and the patio rebuilt. Oh, goody!

We had the tail end of Gustav up here last night and this morning but no biggie, just rain and winds taking all the dead branches out of trees and making a mess of the back yard.

Moore, that water-proofing thing is absolutely not a fun way to part with hard earned dollars. Ugh.

We had an early start today, around 7, so I started baking peach pies for a family brunch tomorrow and one for my friend Christine who popped by around 10 for a cuppa and took hers home still hot from the oven. Everybody really likes them this time of the year, but what a mess they make of the kitchen. I have flour all over me, the counters and the doggies, but at least it doesn't show on them. Our peaches ripen way later up here than you all would have - it's kind of a September thing.

Later on this afternoon, we'll head out for one last errand of the day - to Pet Valu for doggie cookies, very, very important to the peace and quiet around here. If ever I even open that pantry door, eight little paws come scampering into the kitchen with brown eyes pleading for a treat. Who's trained who, LOL? Of course they always get one.

Jojo, are you used to the Wyoming weather patterns yet? I know that you always wanted to be around snow.

Mike's new CD debuts tonight at the old Horseshoe Tavern here in town. Big night for him. Then he leaves for some town in WV tomorrow afternoon via DC, will be there all week, home weekends, for the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Brad Pitt is in Toronto!! He's here for TIFF. I likey him. :) He was MY discovery in Thelma and Louise. I went to see that movie with a girlfriend a million years ago and remember so well drooling over the unknown actor who played the cowboy. I like to think he came here to see me. :) Delusions are helpful sometimes.

LOL! I do hope Brad stops by for some of your peach pie, Kae. devilish.gif

And no. I'm absolutely not used to Wyoming weather patterns. When I lived and worked in the both very hot and humid Arkansas and Texas, I longed to see snow that would actually stick. But now that I've lived through a Wyoming winter, I would be happy with only one good snow a year. Haha.
I guess I just remember last year, I started my job about this time, and it was warm and beautiful. But September hasn't started out so great. The ofifice had been planning a trip out west to one of our offices over the mountains, which is near Yellowstone, but it's already started the snow there. So, that's out. I should be out doing something with Jack today, like a trip to Devil's Tower or something, but the weather is looking rather unpredictable, and looks like rain may be near again. The sky has that look about it, and I don't want to get stuck out on the trails out there.

And good luck to Mike for his new CD debut!

Moore, so sorry for the flooding. If I lived near, I would come help you vac!!!

I'm about to snuggle in a read for a bit. I'm in the mood for a trashy read today, and I hav the perfect book picked out!

Yeah, Jojo, last winter was really a snowy one here too, but at least we don't usually get much until January, Snow in September is NOT my choice either, lol. Good thing neither of us live in the real north. Ugh.

Well, Mike's off now for his gig preps, Nick's at Virgin Festival on Centre Island already. That's Richard Branson's thing. He got a two day pass given to him, so he'll miss brunch tomorrow. Tony and his family are at a local fair - weather's cleared up nicely but it's still humid.

Hope your snuggle read is fun, Jojo. And Shelly has her big luncheon today. I saw the news this morning that Connecticut was hit already and tomorrow will be a mess. Sure hope all is well with them there. The best laid plans, eh?

I think that we now have the water issue under control. It's stopped raining, and new water isn't coming inside anymore.

We're so used to this now that we have a bit of a system. THIS time, water wasn't pouring in from behind the front wall, so it wasn't a complete disaster. We ended up opening the side/basement door, pulled out a director's chair, propped the hose against the chair (at the proper angle) to suck water from the OUTSIDE (before it could come in), got comfortable with some tea (in Jim's case) or sherry (in my case as it has been a challenging couple of days), and the handy Kindle thingy...

Jojo, I think that curling up with a good trashy read sounds absolutely glorious right now! I hope you like what you've chosen.

KaeEll, good luck to Mike with the CD. I'm sure that it's going to be a success.

And, I'm quite certain that Brad Pitt was up there to see you. He's just too shy to knock on your door, but you have it ALL over that Angelina Jolie creature. No question!

Nope, the luncheon is tomorrow. Though we spent the better part of the afternoon getting the church ready for it. Our church had a mens breakfast this morning so I had to wait to decorate the tables until this afternoon.

Did you have fun, Shelly? I always love the decorating part of any event! It's so nice to see it come together, and to envision what it's going to be like when the food is introduced.

Did you make up your mind about the sandwiches?

By the way, we must be a popular little board lately! Has anyone noticed how many "guest" visits we've had the past week or so, and ESPECIALLY during the past 24 hours?!

Ooh, we have guests? I wonder if they like what they see.....

Okay, since my last post apparently didn't post, or I didn't hit post, or whatever, I'll post what I has intended to earlier.

The snow here usually goes from November/December to February. It's a pain in the rear.

Good luck with your luncheon tomorrow Shelly!

Moore, so glad the flooding was totally disasterous.

HAHAHAHA!!!

I'm going to assume that you meant *wasn't*, jojo, unless that was a Freudian slip, and you're secretly wishing some evil upon my house! So funny...

Yes, we were lucky this time.

And YES, we have guests! Every few hours now, apparently. Quite an increase in such a short period of time. Either we're more searchable than I always thought, or it's a miracle!

Shelly, I hope that your luncheon is a great success. I know it will be! Please send leftovers, and if KaeEll would please send a little of that peach pie our way, we'd all be happy...

Addition: Here's a link to one part of Fairfax County that got a whole lot of flooding. I am SO glad that this didn't wind up in our basement! (A little slow to load...)

Too much water!

LOL!! Sorry Moore. Yes, I meant *wasn't*. Hehe. I wouldn't wish any evil upon your house.

Perhaps all these "guests" see that we talk a lot about our lives and are turned off. Or, Maybe they are living vicariously through us. wink.gif

Wow yeah, like 6 guests all within the last day or so. Goodness, I remember Kae once mentioned that we had a guest who checked in from like China or something once, that was cool.

Anyways, I am still finishing the end touches. Since we are doing this thing on mentoring I had as many ladies as who would participate give me a little note about their mentor and I typed it up, was going to put it on construction paper and then laminate to put sporadically along the tables. But my friend Misty found these paper doilies and I thought it would be cool to glue one on each and then put them along the table. I will take some pictures. I was rather pleased. And thankfully this onslaught of rain started after we were through.

Anyways, I hope you all had a great Saturday despite the cruddy weather on the coast here. Jojo how is everything in WY. I mean do you still like your job? Is Jackson enjoying the new school year? Any new buddies?

Sounds cute, Shelly!

Yes, I still like my job. However, there was major drama Friday, and I feel very hurt by my co-workers. We shall see what next week brings.

Jack is doing good in school. He loves it! I'm so happy he's doing well, and seems to be readjusting to school just fine.

Guests, eh? I wonder who could possibly be interested in our little gab fests about nothing in particular? Shelly, it was Poland AND China last week! Cool, non?

Ted and I fell asleep in front of the TV after dinner with a pie in the oven that burnt to a crisp. My house smells divine, but what a mess. I guess it's back to the rolling pin first thing in the morning. Sleep well, all. See you tomorrow.

Shelly, I love the idea of using the paper doilies with information on each mentor. Very, very nice. I used doilies once too, on the birthday bulletin board, as snowflakes, and wrote each birthday child's name on those. Your doilies will look very pretty, scattered around the table, and will mean a great deal to everyone! Great job, Shelly.

Jojo, I'm so glad to know that Jackson's school year has started out so well, and that he's enthusiastic about it. I'm sorry about your office drama, though. I remember those, and they're not fun! I hope that the weekend will calm everyone down, and that you can return to a more normal atmosphere tomorrow.

KaeEll -- what can I say? I'm so sorry about the pie, but I can also completely relate to the experience. Can't count the number of times that the sleep gods have attacked Jim and me while we were sitting innocently on the couch! These sneaky gods have been targeting us since we were in our twenties, intensified their attacks on us when we were exhausted from chasing our babies, and we haven't been able to figure out how to get rid of them yet. I'm sorry to tell you that your sacrificial pie probaby won't do the trick either, and you should prepare yourself, and Ted, for further attacks. Just being realistic here...

Giggle. Sleep Gods. Those sneaky creatures. Sorry 'bout the pie, Kae.

Went to the grocery store this morning. It's raining out (AGAIN), so my jeans are soaked at the bottom. So yucky and cold feeling!

I have NASCAR and football to watch today, so I'm about to put together my yummy seven layer dip. Actually, it's six layer because I usually leave the scallions off. When I'm in the mood for them, I'll put them on, but I'm not much in the mood for them today.

Moore, I'm hoping things are calmed down too. I have to talk to my boss tomorrow at some point, and I'm really anxious about it. My co-workers apparently took something I said in a joking manner the wrong way, and all complained about it. The thing that hurts though, is that that day it supposedly happened, we are all having a great time, laughing and joking, and I even made a run to the quick stop for candy and drinks for everyone. And these same girls have made comments before that have hurt my feelings, but I chalk it up to having a bad day. Everyone is entitled to them. Well, if my boss wants feedback on when these things happen, I'm prepared to offer it.

Jojo, the problem with office friendships is that frequently there are other undercurrents going on that you might not find in "normal" friendships. You're thrown in with a lot of people that you might not otherwise choose as friends, but you need to get along with them for the sake of the job. Sometimes, those people you think are friends are just friends on the surface, and they'll find ways to undermine things that you do, in an effort to make themselves look better to the boss.

I'll give you the same advice that I've given my oldest daughter, who's run into the same thing. This daughter has a tendency to speak her mind without always thinking how others will interpret her honest opinions (has done this since she was two), and sometimes it comes back to bite her. She also has a sense of humor that others don't always "get", so when she thinks that she's joking along with the others, people will occasionally take offense. She's relaxed, she's joking, and she doesn't think before she jumps in with everyone else.

My daughter works with a lot of very creative, laid-back people, in a casual atmosphere, but even so, offices are simply different animals.

So...keep this experience in the back of your mind; you've been alerted to the hidden agenda now. Watch your back, but maintain your dignity and grace at all times. Rise above the pettiness yourself, and choose your words carefully. This is clearly an office where people are taking notes, so be certain that even your most humorous remarks can't be taken out of context.

It's rough out there!

Today is gorgeous (cool and sunny), and all memories of the flooded basement have passed. Jim is out looking for downspout pipe at Home Depot so that we can address one problem, but otherwise it's a quiet day.
