The weekend

Hidy ho, folks.

I've knocked another gift off my list and am now down to about 3 left to buy. I'm so excited to almost be done.

I went grocery shopping today, put a few more ornaments on the tree to finish it off, and now I'm making potato soup.

Anything fun going on this weekend?

It's a really cold Sunday morning here. We had a good little snow fall yesterday while we were out getting the Christmas tree from the boy scout lot at a nearby church, making it seem more seasonal, got me into the spirit a bit. Then Christine stopped by with her new roasted almonds for Ted to try out. She's serving them at a party next week and needed a guinea pig. We had tea and then a glass of sherry and by the time she left, it was too late to cook anything for dinner, so I just tossed a pizza in the oven.

Today we have to drive my parents out to my father's family Christmas party, clear across town. Tony isn't going as he has to be at the airport at 3 (California again) and his wife's mother is in town, nixing her possible attendance. So ugh. If I'm lucky, my favourite cousins will be there, but they live up north and with all this snow, who knows if they'll venture down here. It's a rather large family with 7 siblings and all the offspring, making for a party of about 50, usually. I was asked to bring dessert this year, butter tarts.

So what's going on with the rest of you kids today? Do you all have the tree up and decorated yet? Ours is up but still naked. Boxes of the decorations are all over the living room floor, but the house smells great from the Frasier fir. What a thirsty thing! We've already fed it over 4 litres of water. Can you hear it slurping?

I remember having a real christmas tree. I won't ever have one again unless Jackson ever specifically asks for it. When it comes to watering the darn things, I typically just forget to, which would end up badly, of course.

My tree has been up since the weekend after thanksgiving. It started with just a few balls last year, but I bought some more balls and lights and bows this year. Well, I finished it, but thought it needed something else, so I went and bought more ornaments and some nice ribbon to wrap around it. I love it now. It's got regular sized turquoise balls, mediums silver balls, small purple ornaments, silver bows and a wide, sheer purple ribbon wrapped around it loosely. I'm quite proud of it, LOL! Maybe I'll post a pick for everyone to see.

Sounds like a large party! Are you making tons of butter tarts? And I know you've provided the recipe before, but I lost a lot of my recipes in the move from ARk to Wyo, and I 've started a new recipe book. Would you mind sharing again? Or, maybe I'm being completely stupid and you never posted the recipe, LOL. I know we've all shared quite a bit of recipes. I've lost count of them all!

I made the most delicious potato soup last night. I'm no cook, but I merged 2 recipes together and came out with my own.
Usually my mother starts with a canned soup base, but I made a base out of mixing the melted butter w/flour, and then wisking milk in until it was thickened. I was quite proud of myself that a. I didn't burn anything and b. it was actually good, LOL. Hey, I'm learning.

Jojo, I love potato soup!! If you have any left over, you can whirl it in the blender with some extra milk or cream, chill it, and you'll have yourself a very acceptable version of Vichyssoise!

KaeEll, I want your tart recipe too...

Our son is coming over for dinner tonight (we haven't seen much of him lately), and Jim requested stew. I just took some pumpkin bread out of the oven for our son to take home with him, to share with his roomies. One of his closest friends from boarding school is back in town for a little while, and will be staying with our son for about a month, so I've gotta feed the boys!! At least it will give them a chunk of something to grab before running to the Metro in the morning.

We had some snow yesterday too, and I was out running around when it started coming down. There wasn't much, just a dusting, but we do still have a little left on our deck. Rather atmospheric...

There's nothing quite like the fragrance of a fresh Christmas tree. I miss having one in our house, but I DON'T miss stepping on stray needles in July! And speaking of trees, I need to get mine decorated, but I swear it feels as though I just took the darned thing DOWN! LOL...

Sounds great! I'll need to get a blender. Yeah, I don't have one, LOL. And that pumpkin bread sounds delish!!!

I have some banana nut bread in there I've been nibbling on...the mom of the little boy who slept over last night baked it and gave it to me as a thanks for taking her little one for the night.

Okay...some photos...Of course, pics don't do these things justice, but oh well. The wreath I made, and I just wrapped some purple ribbon from the tree around the little silver cone tree I have on the table.

Jojo, the tree looks gorgeous! I love the colors you used. Just beautiful, as are the other decorations. The purple ribbon wrapped around the tree is so pretty too...

I confess that the pumpkin bread was out of a box: Pillsbury. It's cooling now, and smells really good. Jim was crushed when he realized that it's being given away! LOL...

Thanks, Moore! I've always always wanted a purple, teal and silver decorated tree.

Hey. Pumpkin bread is pumpkin bread. Pillsbury is respectable, LOL!

I would LOVE to have a tree that's predominantly purple, blue, teal, and red, with golds and silvers mixed in. Those are such royal colors, and make me think of the three kings.

I'm afraid that I'm pretty much locked into what I have now for our main tree, and I have a second little one that I put in our family room, but maybe I could use those colors in the dining room. Hmmm..........

Here's a link to a recipe online that is exactly like the one my mother gave to me, except she and I add chopped walnuts or pecans to the goop. A little messy but yummy.

We're back from the party and I am exhausted. My fave cousins DID make it, yay. Missing were two of cousins' wives that make me cringe, so that was nice. Cousin form Ottawa was even there along with some from Guelph and Whitby, so it was a good party. I ate too much capellini in sesame and hoison sauce that made me sick, silly me, my fault. I never learn. As soon as my mother fell asleep in a chair, we beat a hasty retreat but the drive across town takes an hour and traffic was nuts. Father was in fine shape, insulting me all the way home for no reason whatever except to get my goat, which he did.

One thing I did recommend for next year is to leave the karaoke machine at home. All the little kids were playing with it all afternoon, gave me a headache. Ugh.

Let me know how you like the butter tarts. I know they can't be found anywhere in the US, at least not where I had lived. Be sure to use corn syrup and not that other stuff (Caro?) which doesn't work in the recipe at all.

Grr, I started a post and my fire fox shut down. Anyways, we did get a wee bit of snow last night. Not enough to get excited about but enough to send me to the store to get salt for the next time. And my friend sent her husband over to take care of my walkway for me..he even salted.

I just got done with the first bit of decorating. Got halfway down the railings of my walkway and ran out of lights. So I am going back into the garage to try and find some more...JOY...

Thanks for the recipe! I'll try them for Christmas dinner at the brother's house.

Kae, kids and karaoke are never a good mix. Neither is an insulting father. Have a nice big glass o' wine and relax, LOL.

Those colors would be gorgeous, Moore! When Christmas is over I plan on hitting the stores for clearanced trees, big and small. I'd like to put a cute little tree in Jacksons room, and allow him to pick out the decorations. Then I'd like to put one on my dinner table in the kitchen. I definitely want some gold in one of them.

Shelly, how nice of your friend to take care of the sidewalks for you!

I made some cheese dip to eat while watching football, and I went into the kitchen to refill my drink and came back to see the cat taking some licks out of the dip bowl. Hmmph. Pets.

I also got some more christmas shopping done this afternoon. I ordered some steaks and steak burgers for my dad and his girlfriend from Omaha Steaks, and I ordered a fire pit for my mother and stepfather. I think I may have 2 gifts left to get, one for my friends baby daughter, who is just now starting to teeth, and one for one of my friends back home.

Jojo, I must have been REALLY wiped out yesterday as I missed your pics of the beautiful tree and decorations completely. So pretty! Well done!!

Just to make you feel even better about your creation, I'll post a pic of my bare naked tree and the stack of boxes in the living room, lol. Quell mess.

KaeEll, I swear to God you and I have the same rug!! If it's not the same, it's very similar. My border has a peach background with pale green on either side, but the main background is cream. It has birds, and leaping creatures that look a bit like deer...

Thanks for the recipe. Yum!!

Moore, mine has leaping deer too! My battery pack is charging right now and when it's all done, I'll take a close up for you to see. There are birds on it as well, typical Tabriz. I bought the thing about 23 years ago and over the years it's had everything you can imagine spilled on it (raising 3 boys, lol) not to mention the doggie booboos, and still it's held up pretty well. One of these days I will have to have the fringes replaced. Do yours look a bit worse for the wear yet? The old Hoover used to snarl them up and chomp off bits if we weren't careful vacuuming.

KaeEll, I've had mine even longer, and it's also had everything happen to it! It wasn't the original floor covering we had here, but I know we've had it for over 25 years because that's how old my first-born is, and she used to crawl on it.

I bought it at a store that was going out of business, so I got it for a good price. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it because of all the birds and leaping deer. It really needs to be taken out, and professionally cleaned, but that such an ordeal.

My fringe is a little worse for the wear too, but I really do love that rug.

How funny that we have either exactly the same one, or at least first cousins!

Moore, we have so many things in common, lol. It's like we live in parallel universes sometimes.

I've only had that thing cleaned professionally once. The guy came in and rolled it up, had it for 2 weeks. They have to be washed by hand and hung to dry. It came back so much brighter, I cringed thinking about what the boys had been sitting on all that time, lol. A few times when I'd rented one of those carpet steamers, I'd go over the worst areas but it's not the same as a professional job. I can't remember exactly what they charged me for the cleaning but it was a few hundred. Well worth it, though.

My battery pack light is still on orange, btw.

I've done the steam thing too, but I know it needs to be removed from the house for a really thorough job. I know it's expensive, but the thing that stops me most is that there's a nap to these carpets with its being a bit brighter when it sits on the floor one direction, as opposed to the other. I'm afraid that I won't realize it's sitting in the non-preferred direction until after the big, strong guys have already left the house, with no one left to turn it but the old folks here!! LOL...

Just for purposes of wear, it ought to be turned anyway, I suppose.

I'll have to borrow Jim's camera, and take pictures of mine. (My own camera still doesn't work, and it's driving me crazy!) Is your border peach?

The outside border is cream, inside one a whole bunch of colours. I hope these pictures help. Can you see the birds and deer?

KaeEll, they're not EXACT, but they're really, really similar. That's amazing!

Your border is different, and not just in background color, but the MAIN part of the rug is very close, with some very slight variations. I'll see if I can get decent pictures of mine.

Thanks for posting those. That's just crazy... My jaw is still hanging open!

LOL!!! These rugs are all hand knotted so no two would ever be identical, but can you imagine the same people in Iran that knotted your rug did the one that I bought 2 years later? What kind of a coincidence is THAT??? Some little village in the middle of the desert sends rugs to North America and you and I bought them. How many miles apart are we? Chills, chills, Moore!! (I am assuming that yours is also a Tabriz and not a machine made duplicate, non?)

Oh, and about the nap and moving the rug around, YES, you have to do that regularly or one end will be more worn that the other. I have Maria do it for me every spring. She hauls out all the furniture and flips it around. Big task, not much fun. (Maria is a huge woman, half Chinese, half Cuban. She moves the fridge and stove to clean behind there as if she were moving a little chair.) You could get your son and a couple of his housemates to come do it for you and then feed them something fabulous. They'll look forward to it every year, lol.

One of my weaknesses has always been Persian rugs and I have a bunch of them all over the house. They last for generations and are a wise investment. In fact, the older they are, the more valuable. I have some really inexpensive pieces of furniture (as in from The Bombay Company) but when set off on a Persian rug, they look like a million bucks, lol.

Thanks Kae! I'm really quite proud of the tree! I'm sure once everything goes on clearance after Christmas I'll get some different shaped ornaments to add to it to spruce it up even more!

And your living room and naked tree looks just like my mother's living room right now, I'm sure. She always pulls the tree out and boxes out over a weekend, and is so tired from doing that she waits until the next weekend to actually decorate, LOL.

Your rug actually looks very similar to one my grandmother had. It's not a Tabriz, I don't think, but it has birds, deer, leaves and squirrels I think. I crawled on it as a baby. She was obsessed with it always being clean, and had it professionally cleaned several times. I would have liked to have had the rug, but when she died it went to someone else in the family who I'm sure doesn't appreciate it.
