September the First!!

Well, there goes the summer, lol. Shorter days, cooler nights and back to school for all the kiddies. *sigh*

We had quite the fright yesterday as someone with access to Nick's Whistler Club Crawl and Entertainment web page on Facebook (his photographer and staff) posted that he had been hit by a car. I read that at 7 in the morning, 4 a.m. BC time, and had to wait a few hours before calling him to ask about his welfare. He's okay, just some cuts and bruises, but our morning was all but devastated with worry. Don't you just love the internet?

After that Marilyn and I went on a whirlwind expedition of shopping for various things, all of which were totally unnecessary, as usual. I did manage to get 4 outfits at Kaiyana, my favourite dress shop, and an egg poacher at this outpost of a housewares store called Cayne's. Moore, it's nothing special, just a 4 egg thingy, but at least I won't be scouring egg whites off of a saucepan any more.

We've had a slue of family over the last few days for dinners and stuff. D-i-l is due in a couple of weeks, and our annual Labour Day picnic is next Monday. I'm not hyper-ventilating about it this year, just taking it as it comes. It's a rain or shine thing and if there are dust bunnies I've overlooked, sobeit, lol.

Shelly, did Jolene make it to her first ever day at school? Did anybody shed a tear? Brandon, I hope the birthday was a jolly one, and one of many, many more.

I'm home all day and car-less but I don't mind. It will make up for all the crazy running around yesterday.

What's on your agenda?

Well Jolene got off to school fine. We walked her there with a few other kids. I am anxious and hope that it goes okay. This first day is an early day and we will pick them up at 1 but the other days are full days. I didn't cry but came close several times.

Awww, Shelly. It's okay to cry... I did!

Jolene looks adorable. That was the PERFECT first-day-of-school outfit to put her in. Darling...

We're having some cool weather here, and it's lovely. I still have no idea what happened to summer, though, and am a little bit freaked out that it went by as quickly as it did. Of course, I essentially lost all of July with that little hospital thingy, and recovery time, so maybe that's why I feel like I've had no summer at all.

KaeEll, that's so scary about the post on Nick's Facebook page! And I DO know how you feel. Been there... When our son was a freshman in college, he was also hit by a car. His college was six hours from here, and the ONLY way to get there is to drive. Fortunately, he too was fine, and was the one to call me. I still remember it as clear as a bell: "Mom. Don't get upset. I'm fine. Are you listening to me?? I'm FINE. I'm at the hospital; I've been hit by a car, but I'm FINE..."

I went numb, but he WAS fine... It took a good ten years off the end of my life, but at least he was fine. I'm SO glad that Nick is too, but what a way to start your day! Just chilling.

So glad you got the egg poacher too! Mine is also just for four eggs, but you can poach eight eggs in mere minutes! Hope you'll love it.

Jolene looks so grown up!! I love her back-to-school outfit too. Is that the same wee girl we saw pictures of 3 years ago? Gah. Good thing WE don't get older too, huh?

So I used the egg poacher this morning and made a huge mess, LOL. I have to get used to it and have just the right amount of flame going. I had it up too high and it erupted all over the stove top. So now instead of having to scour one pot, I have 4 egg cups, the sauce pan and the top of the stove. At least the eggs were good.

There's a big scandal going on in town here. Our former Attorney General was arrested for killing a man with his car and leaving the scene. There were witnesses!! Apparently the poor man was on a bike and was holding onto the AG's car as he drove up Avenue Road in his splashy convertible. The AG swerved into the oncoming lane then ran over the man and his bike and sped away. He was caught by the police in a nearby hotel. The freakin' Attorney General!! Can you imagine what sort of justice he'd meted out?

Moore, glad your son too was okay after being hit. I swear these adult kids are ten times the worry that they were when they were little.

Thanks guys, I love that I have you all to talk to during the day. I leave to get her in a few minutes. This first day I think was all about getting adjusted. And thanks about the dress. Would you believe I found it at Wal Mart?

Anyways, it is flat out chilly up here. Don't think it hit 70.

That's what we're here for, Shelly!! It's a huge adjustment for both parent AND child, but ends up being good for everyone. I love the colors in Jolene's outfit. It's perfect for early fall, and reminds me a bit of school uniforms, but WAY cuter! Good job...

KaeEll, I'm glad that the eggs tasted good. LOL!! You'll get the hang of it... I'm assuming that your egg cups are nonstick?

And yes -- adult kids are even more horrifying than little ones, and their problems are bigger. For example...our son is just enormously smart. Everyone in our family acknowledges that, and anyone who meets him, and who spends five minutes talking to him, walks away with that understanding. Smart, smart, smart, and just a sweetheart.

Well, last Thursday he BlackBerried his dad, early in the morning, that he probably wouldn't be able to have lunch with him that day because he was going to have a wisdom tooth removed. He was already on his way to Howard University School of Dentistry, via the Metro. Howard University is deep in the heart of Washington, DC, and isn't a route I'm all that familiar with. So, here was his thinking: he would have the wisdom tooth extracted (which has to be done under anesthesia), then he was gonna hop back on Metro (while in pain, feeling sleepy, and probably a bit queasy too) for a long, bumpy ride to his local station, and then WALK several blocks to his house.

I wanted to strangle him!

It turned out that they postponed his extraction until 9/8, so the current REVISED plan is that either Jim or I will bring him home, and by "home" I mean HERE, so that he can sleep overnight in his old room, and mommy will feed the kid broth.

What was he thinking???

Moore!!! That's almost exactly what happened here when Nick had his 4 wisdom teeth removed. Smart is one thing, sensible is quite another!!

Anyway, after Nick had all his 4 wisdom teeth out, the oral surgeon said "Where is a family member? You can't leave here unaccompanied by one, it's the LAW". So he called his dad and Ted dropped everything to go fetch him while I was completely in the dark about the whole thing. The guys found me having lunch with d-i-l and kiddies and I took Nick to the pharmacy to fill the prescriptions. He fell asleep in the blood pressure chair. I called his work and told them he wouldn't be back in that day. Good grief!

Shelly, I hope Jolene loved her first day. Will you make her a treat snack for being such a brave girl?

Honest to God, KaeEll, you and I lead parallel lives...

Very weird. I think one of the biggest clues was when we discovered that we pretty much have the same darned rug! LOL...

So here's my messy egg cups things, all crusty even after soaking since early this morning. Yeah, it's supposed to be a non-stick poacher and I even seasoned the cups with olive oil and salt. Peh. See what I mean by making a mess?

How do I clean them now?

I have no idea how you would clean those. Did they come with instructions that might have hints in it?

And Jolene had a good day, her teacher said she has lots of energy. I could have told her that.

And she got a Popsicle when she got home.

KaeEll, it's hard to tell from the picture, but do those little cups have a bunch of tiny holes in the bottom? Mine don't get that encrusted because there's already a little water in the bottom of the cups (that comes up through the holes) before the eggs even go into the cups, so there's no real opportunity for any egg to get stuck like that. If your cups are solid on the bottom, that may be why...

Hmmm... Because they're nonstick, you might want to use a cotton dishcloth on them, with plenty of soap, and just rub gently.

Shelly, I'm so glad that Jolene had a successful day. I'll be she had lots to tell. And she definitely deserved that popsicle!
