Here's a copy of an email I sent early this morning to my kids. The one thing that keeps springing to my mind about the ceremony was that it looked more like a grade seven science fair effort than a humble yet proud representation of our glorious country.
I need to vent. Firstly, 4 of the First Nations Chiefs were LATE to the royal box and made that segment look like hell. Then there was an atrocious rendition of O Canada, absolutely vile. The "cultural segment" was amateurish and reminded me of a group of unemployed CBC producers, on some herbal refreshment, conjuring up something "witty". The bit with the suspended red clad skiers and snowboarders was honestly horrid.
Then, of course, was the astoundingly BAD choice of that defector hockey guy lighting the cauldron.
Shouldn't CTV hire some people under 80 for commentary? Was it so hard for them to see that the torch was in fact replaced en route to the outdoor cauldron? Nooo, they had to natter on ad nauseum about the miracle of the endless torch.
Hydraulic lifts malfunctioning during the MOST IMPORTANT part of the ceremony? But they did just fine for all the half ass sh*t beforehand?
Then we could consider the RAIN, the death of a luge competitor on a track that was likely badly designed (and is getting modified) and the general, overall, terrible coverage by CTV. I know I'm a crabby old bitch, but these opening ceremonies were a huge disappointment. It could have been done simply and elegantly, but they chose to junk it all up with poorly planned amateurish schlock. Real Canadian cheese, of the worst variety.
Yes, 17 days in all. We finally won a gold yesterday in men's moguls, a kid from Quebec. Tonight at 8 there is figure skating, pairs, I think. The Chinese couple is expected to win that.
