My crazy-creative doll club friend.

We have our annual exhibit to hang on May 1st, and my friend, Sue, made up a pair of elephants that are so charming (especially in person) that they're to die for! She's SO talented, and for years wouldn't exhibit anything. She's really come out of her shell the past couple of years, and I'm SO proud of her. I absolutely adore everything she makes!

These, as usual, were her own design. The bodies are cloth that she's painted, and the heads are made from paperclay. Aren't they adorable?!!? I love their polka dot ears.

Yes, they ARE absolutely wonderful! What little one (or old one, lol) wouldn't love having these around to brighten a day? Sue has a real talent for tapping into those childhood fantasies, non?

Is Sue or any of the fine craftsmen in the club making any rabbit dolls? Tim Burton seems to have brought the old Alice in Wonderland characters to life again. My bet is that a rabbit or two a la March Hare would spark a lot of interest. I'll try to post a pic of a rabbit sculpture thingy I just ordered. Maybe it's just me. smile.gif

I love that bookshelf, KaeEll. Love it...

Great idea about the current interest in Alice in Wonderland, because of the movie. You reminded me that I have a couple of patterns for Alice in Wonderland pin cushions! I also found a pattern for the Mad Hatter on the website where I buy most of my patterns (owned by two of our club members). They have a rabbit, but I'm not all that adept at sewing with "fur".

If I order the Mad Hatter pattern today, maybe I could actually get it made in time. Maybe... LOL. Here's a picture of that pattern, and the one I already have for the pin cushions.

OMG, I love the Mad Hatter! Just absolutely love him.

Moore, do you remember what was the chemical in the stiffening agent used in hats (in days of yore) that caused the hatters themselves to go crazy? It wasn't a myth, it actually was a fact that milliners in the olden days would loose marbles regularly. (That I had such an excuse now.) As I recall, it was a fairly ordinary substance by today's standards.

I think I may have to make that Mad Hatter! He's actually a rather large doll (23"), and is designed by a wonderful doll maker named Julie McCullough.

I dug out my pin cushion pattern for Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the mouse, and discovered that I have another one by the same designer (Karen Shifton) that's of the queen, the two Tweedles, and the rabbit. If I have time, I may make them, but they all actually require a lot of rather fussy work for something very small. We'll see... But the Mad Hatter would be great fun to make!

It looks like I'm going to have to do a little online shopping today! Just what I need: more patterns! LOL...

Oops -- I forgot to answer your question about the hats. I'm not sure that I know what you're talking about, right off the top of my head. The thing that keeps getting in the way is that the same thing happened with painting dolls, back in the early days. Arsenic was added to white paint, and it did it's nasty work on a lot of people. But I'm going to have to think about the hats. We should probably do a Google search.

Some people are naturally so creative. Those elephant dolls are very cute. I am sure you all have a lot of fun getting together showing your creations!
