Yes, when in doubt, throw it out. But, of course, it does NOT go into the garbage or recycle bins; it goes to a hazardous waste dump or to the local pharmacist who has access to it. It makes me crazy when these things get tossed down a toilet.

All the drug stores here accept old, out-of-date drugs, both over-the-counter and prescription, liquid and solid. A person stops by once a month or so and collects them, then takes them to the proper incineration facility for disposal. That way our water system isn't severely compromised by these nasty things. I'm sure the USA must have a similar system in place. Please take a moment to ensure that is the case before tossing dangerous substances into the trash.
