Britney's downfall:
a hairy situationYou know, here at Top Events we like to crack jokes. It's fun. And certainly Britney Spears has provided us with plenty of comedic fodder ever since she first donned that notorious Catholic schoolgirl skirt of hers; her life especially became a comedy of errors after she hooked up with not-so-eligible bachelor Kevin Federline. Whether she was getting hitched in Vegas, padding around barefoot in public restrooms, starring with her husband in horrifically bad UPN reality shows, demonstrating little awareness of baby-carseat safety, giving weepy Today Show interviews, or flashing her private Brit-bits for all the paparazzi to see, Britney never failed to amuse. But now we have to say: It's just not funny anymore. The seemingly unstoppable downward spiral of the fallen former teen star's life over the past week (her bizarre public head-shaving, her impulse tattoos, her crappy choice in wigs, her three stints in rehab) could fill an entire season's worth of E! True Hollywood Stories. And unfortch, none of those THS's would have a happy, rising-from-ashes ending.



Britney: not that
innocent, apparently It's really too bad, because for a while there, it seemed like Britney was on the comeback path, and we were rooting for her. Only a few months ago, the night before her internationally celebrated divorce announcement, she made a surprise appearance on Letterman, looking sleek and blondely bobbed and healthy and happy. Then she was plastered all over magazine covers as some sort of Weight Watchers success story, flaunting a post-baby body that she'd whipped back into pre-pregnancy shape in a matter of weeks. Then it was reported that she was back in the studio with the likes of master hitmakers Kanye West and Pharrell, working diligently on a comeback effort, her first studio album since 2003's In The Zone. Finally, all seemed well in Britney's world. But after the wild week she's just had, if she ever manages a comeback now, it'll be such an odds-defying feat that Mariah Carey's post-Glitter revival will look like nuthin'.



K-Fed: the lesser
of two evils?Yes, sadly America's former sweetheart has taken such a turn for the worse that her once-despised ex, K-Fed, is starting to look like an actual role model. After all, since his split from Brit, he's pretty much kept a low profile (aside from a very high-profile, not to mention highly lucrative, Super Bowl commercial), minimizing his partying while espousing allegedly fatherly concern for Sean Preston and Jayden James. Meanwhile, his estranged babymama's been carousing with crotch-flashing partiers/ partners in crime Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, and has pretty much lost her mind along with her hair. Sheesh. It's quite fathomable that if the Spears-Federline custody hearing had taken place this week as planned (it was conveniently cancelled when Britney rechecked into rehab), K-Fed would've prevailed. Who'd a thunk?
Anyway, there's other stuff going on in music this week (reality-show buzz courtesy of American Idol and Dancing With The Stars, some good Guns N' Roses gossip), but frankly, all of that seems to pale in comparison to Britney's breakdown. And while it's hard to imagine that Britney will make it through the proposed 30 to 45 days of rehab ahead of her since she has yet to last even 30 to 45 hours, from the bottom of our broken hearts we still wish her a speedy recovery and a swift, Mariah-style comeback
