the language we use

the whole imus thing has got me thinking about this tho it's not the first time.

yes, what imus said was aweful & disrepectful, but i have a hard time holding him to a higher standard then the rappers, etc. i'm positive he will be back on satallite radio by the end of may.

that being said i find myself greatly disturbed by the casual use of words such as whore, ho, skank & slut to describe certain characters.....esp when it's other woman tossing these terms around. it demeans all women when people use these terms....esp so often & freely.

one of the things i like so much about this board is that we don't use that verbiage here.

any thoughts?

Kris, I'm with you on this topic. The shock value of foul language has faded, and yet it seems to prevail nonetheless. There are so many ways to express one's opinions without reverting to unpleasant words, it's a pity that some feel the need to do so.

Wait until Moore sees this thread. She'll have a paragraph or two on the subject, lol.

I know from time to time, when I'm especially stressed out, I'll use an expletive or two to express my frustrations, but it always shames me for being too lazy to find a more expressive thing to say. And now with a little 2 year old in my life, I have to be extra careful.

i just hate going to other soap boards & see women calling female characters skanks, whore & sluts. when we talk like that ~~~ even tho they are fictional characters ~~~ it demeans us all.

Valid point. If you caught the Desperate Housewives promo, they tossed slut around a bit. I've noticed that it's often female to female insulting that sees these words come out more often. In fact, what was sad, I saw two girls about age... 15-16 and they were just joking back and forth and one called the other slut and then the other retaliated in kind with bitch. Yep... kind of sad. Sure it was "all in fun" but there's a limit I guess.

a friend of mine has a 15yo & regularly invades her mySpace. she is very distressed b/c this is the way girls this age seem to commonly adress each other. my daughter tells me it's common at her school as well. it's just.....sad that these young woman so willing accept this kind of language.

I check my son's myspace page alot, much to his dismay, and the teen girls are really mean to each other! They throw those nasty words around alot, but what can we expect, they see it in the media, movies, MTV, rap songs, etc.

I was raised on Andy Griffith for goodness sakes.

As for Imus, I'm not a fan, but I feel that there is a disregard for freedom of speech in this case. Why are the rap songs that use the word HO played on radio stations, but everyone freaks out when Imus says Ho. He was wrong, and he was rude, but he did not invent the word.

And he did apologize, I'd like to see every rap song writer apologize! And don't get me started on their videos! Talk about soft porn...

Anyone remember the song "You's a Ho" by Ludacris. I remember when there was a time during which we could not find a single station that didn't have the song on it. I seriously thing that was one of the songs that started it all.

Hip-Hop/Rap culture has a lot of blame here. Not to say this is true of all artists but that is a lot of what they put out there. Gotta pimp my hos and buy my bling.... whatever...

and rappers use their tough life as an excuse for all that nastiness. what BS.

one of the things i hate most on SOC is the constant *skank* & ho talk. these are meinly women calling other women, albiet fictional ones, these disrepectful names.
