I wonder what you ladies think about this. I mean it sounds crazy but its true. Think about early Nat. Think about early Vangy. Both were spunky, strong, intelligent sexy ladies but now when the writers put them with guys they get all whinny, sappy, and weak. Wouldn't you think that means the writers don't like women? What do our lovely ladies of the board think on this topic?
Just because they're sneaky or deceptive doesn't neccessarily mean they are strong. I can always appreciate your opinion bran but i'd really like to hear from the ladies on this one.
I guess i'll give you a checkmark on Vikki and Tess isn't on the scene anymore so she doesn't count.
I have to say that I am with Bran about Dorian, Lindsay and Vicki. You can add Nora to that list too. And I think that Jessica is strong too....she just tends to get a little wishy washy, but you cant go through what she went through and be a weak woman.
I think that Natalie is strong too, she would have to be to put up with John for so long (and yes I know that doesnt make her so smart).
I know Starr isnt a woman yet but she definitely has the strong thing down pat. Blair used to be strong but then they wrote her stupid the way she fell for every single thing that Spencer threw at her.
I do agree that Vange has become kinda weak, just goes back to what I always say about her and RJ. He didn't make her weak at all, they were awesome....and on that note Christian didnt make Nat weak either, must be John's fault
Hmmm, I don't know. I guess i'm seeing it different than you two. I guess my main thing is Nat and Evangeline. I mean Nat is a shell of her former self. Its like they said just because you're with John we have to change the way you are. I guess i'm seeing the way i'm seeing it mainly because of what they've done to my two main favorite female characters.
On the Vangie point they now have her doubting herself and turning herself inside out about a guy.....she'd never have done that when she was introduced.
I'm an lifelong alltyme Dorian fan also but I don't know if just because she's a schemer that means she's strong or I shouldn't neccessarily use the word strong as much as a positive trait or portrayal.
i dont know that I totally blame john. But it seems that every woman he is with turns to mush. So far neither Vange or Nat have found the right man to make them strong again. Chris only made Vange worse, but things could look up if she stayed with Todd.
And I tried to like John, mainly because I love Michael Easton...but I just can not
Dorian, Viki, Lindsay, Nora, Renee and Blair are all strong women in their own ways, at least they were before Higley got her hands on them. It's just that the writing for all of them has been mangled. Natalie was feisty and headstrong until John got into the mix, arguing with her, driving her nuts. And then there's Jessica, who used to be one of my favourites.
Herbst, I'm losing interest in OLTL at the moment. I really can't stand Marty and she's on so much. The Todd's kid story is a bust, the Nash and Jess story is a huge mess, and the Nora/Lindsay rivalry, as much as I like seeing them both, is stale.
I'm watching my tape right now, and I'm ffing the lion's share of it. When Higley's finally replaced, maybe this soap that used to be so good, will come back. Or maybe it's Frons that's screwing with it. I don't care enough, actually, to read what the pundits have to say on the topic. And that's a huge switch for me!
okay, i object to the whole premise that the male character define the female character as a woman of strength.
higley came to town being touted as a woman's writer. as my kids would say, "she fails at life*. she is so not woman's writer.
i've never been an evangaline fan, but she was a more positive. natalie was great & has long been a fav of mine. she could've/shold've been written as the person who dragged john out of his incessant depression by his bootstraps. instead he was used to destroy this feisty young character.
the blame rest at higley the hideous feet.
