I see their point, but I must refute this by pointing out that Japan has some of the highest scores among their schools, and their technology is a million times greater than ours. Just about every person there has a cell phone and texting is as common as drinking water.

Interesting! But is that the only reason that grammar and spelling have deteriorated so badly, especially on the message boards (not this one, though ;) )? Wouldn't schools have to take some responsibily?

Yeah they should take some responsibility. But I swear to you this, my kid starts leaving notes in "textese" she's getting a good grammar lesson out of it.

i recently saw a news segment about this....how HS & college students writing term papers & other assignments in text language. if i were a techer i would fail any student of mine who did that w/no do~overs either.

I dont think I would refuse to let the student do it over. Honestly I dont blame the kids for what society and technology is allowing them to do
