Life has been absolutely insane at work, and trying to coordinate getting the house ready for summer. Work has grown to a 65+ hour a week job these days. I'm actually going to take a half day on Friday and the weekend off.
My daughter graduates college on Saturday, and I have a wonderful dinner planned for all 26 members of my immediate family the next evening at my favorite restaurant the following night. It has been crazy trying to coordinate the final menu. Thank goodness the restaurant sent the menu off to their printers yesterday, and I should have everything covered.
Here's what I picked: Appetizers: Clams casino (My favorite!) Irish smoked salmon Chicken wings Three dozen bruschetta
Dinner selections: 12oz fillet mignon 14 oz NY sirloin Surf & Turf (petite fillet and baked stuffed shrimp) Mixed grill (petite fillet, conf-something of duck and grilled shrimp) Salmon fillet A boring chicken dish
Sides with dinner (It's an aldente steak house) Augratin potatoes Garlic mashed potatoes Roasted red bliss potatoes Asparagus with hollandaise sauce Broccoli with hollandaise sauce
Salad: Mainated cherry tomato and red onion over shredded lettuce
Dessert: Chocolate and walnut bread pudding with carmel sauce and vanilla ice cream taramisou Puff pastry with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce Raspberry creme broule
Thank goodness I don't have to pay college tuition any longer!
It's a five star place, so if I hear one complaint from anyone in my family, I am going to shoot them. I'm also picking up the bar tab, I'm controlling the wine by picking a few bottles, and having the servers pour from them. They have $70.00 glasses of wine, and I was petrified of someone inadvertently picking one of them!
I hope everyone's doing well, and I'll try to check in more frequently, I have not even been turning my computer at home on, after spending all day and some evenings plugging away at the one at work!
Vegas was different..... The first few days were great, but on Sunday my daughter became intoxicated at the pool, and turned into a jerk. I tried to get her out of there, and away from the five English letches who were hitting on her. She got mad and went back to the pool, and I let her go, and went down a half hour later to find her. No luck..... a half hour later no luck again. I was in panic mode and getting ready to go to the front desk and try to figure out how to find a drunk 22-year-old. There was no answer on her cell phone. There was a knock on the door, and three girls asked me if I had a daughter at the pool. I said "Yes"... They proceeded to tell me that I needed to get down there immediately because she had fallen and split her head open, and the ambulance was taking her away. We spent seven hours at the hospital, and I will never complain about one around here again. She had a CAT scan because she lost conciousness. She had a concussion, and ended-up with eight stitches in her chin, where she split it open.
Needless to say I was not happy, and basically was thrilled when I got on a plane the next day with my hung-over black eyed, stitched up daughter. Talk about a long flight home, and a really awful way to wrap-up a trip. It was very expensive, and I did not leave with a good feeling. I only lost $500.00 gambling, though!
oh my goodness sophia I have missed you....that is scary about your daughter, though I am glad that it wasnt worse....Glad your home and it sounds like you have a HUGE party on your hands tomorrow, your daughter is very lucky
Thanks guys! My family is a tough group to please, and I honestly don't know how I would have pulled off a party at the house, and all of the preparations needed with my insane work schedule. I still do not have any flowers planted, or mulch spread. I'm going to make some phone calls today, and try to find a landscape company who can come out, bring mulch and spread it. I have to be careful about what I lift, even four months after my surgery, because I found out that I have abdominal muscles that are still healing, and will be that way for up to a year.
I have Scotts Lawn Service doing my fertilizing, which is just as well after last summer, when my back yard looked like I had crop circles in it from over fertilizing. My lawn is on some serious drugs, and required mowing twice a week! Thank goodness I have a riding mower!
I seriously hope that my daughter has learned some lessons about drinking, although I have a nagging fear that she may have been slipped something into a beer that the guys from London gave her. I bartended for years, and I have never seen someone so out of it in all my years. I was with her for most of the time, and I don't understand how four beers in four hours could have put her into the condition that she was.... She has said that she will not drink again, and I just told her that the next time she starts to feel intoxicated, she needs to tilt her chin up, and look at the scar to remind her of the evils of alcohol. She landed an incredible job at a financial services firm in downtown Boston, which she starts on June 4. I'm thrilled for her. They are starting her out at $40,000, which blew me over. Her degree is in economics, with a minor in political science and a certificate in international relations. They also have a great tuition reimbursement program, and she is looking at starting working on her MBA, at Boston University, in the evenings, in the fall.
So, all is good!
I have missed you guys also! I am working from home today, thank goodness, so hopefully I can do some serious multi-tasking, and get my hay field mowed on my breaks. I mowed it on Monday, and it already looks like I could have a herd grazing for months on it!
4 beers in 4 hours and she is a college student....No way would that alone make her zone out. They had to have slipped her something, so she is lucky in a sense that she busted her chin because who knows what else could have happened. Crazy...
and Sophia if you ever need anymore help remember I am only a little bit away, I just drove to NC to help a friend move....going the hour or so to help you would be nothing.
Have fun with the party, I wish you were my mom...I should be graduating with my AA in December...but thats not a big of a deal as what your daughter did. Thats awesome
Some trip to Vegas! What a disaster for you, Sophia. We've had some experience with drugged drinks and the consequences, and it certainly sounds like your daughter has as well. There's no proving it unless blood work is done straightaway, but I think you can safely assume that was the case.
Here, in this city, women may now take their drinks with them to the washrooms because the problem had become rampant in bars and clubs.
Good luck with the dinner party. I hope your daughter appreciates what mom's doing for her, and feels more than a bit sheepish about her Las Vegas misadventure. It might not have been her fault, but it was a learning experience, and it did ruin the trip for you.
Lol wow! Tess!!! That is some party. It sounds wonderful. I hope everyone has a great time. My aunt just graduated from college last weekend and her party consisted of a whole lotta alcohol and a cook out. I didn't go though because it was my birhtday and I wanted RedLobster and so didn't want a hangover.
The only thing with 4 beers in 4 hours, is: did she drink any water, she may have been dehydrated. In Vegas, you have to drink lots and lots of water....

I honestly don't remember if she drank any water, I brought two bottles down to the pool with us, that was what I was drinking. Although if I had to make a guess, I'd go with no water, just beer. We had a huge breakfast that morning, we hit the buffet, at our hotel, MGM Grand.
Thanks for all the well wished and good thoughts! It's going to be an insanely busy weekend, starting tomorrow. I'm taking a half day from work, and meeting my daughter at a mall, to buy her a couple of outfits for the events over the weekend. I can't believe she doesn't have anything to wear..... But at least I'll buy her something that she will be able to wear into the office at her new job. I told her to take a credit card, that she has on one of my accounts to go buy something, but she wants her mommy with her. LOL, that means it will cost me twice as much, because she knows that I'm very type Aish about everything needing to match, and she will end-up with a few pairs of shoes that are appropriate for the office also.
Dang, we did cut the cord, literally, about 22 years ago.... I guess it is true what everyone said, she will always be my baby!
