Ouch, ouch, ouch...

I'm actually supposed to be in Wyoming right now, but I had to push the trip back a week so I can recover from my car accident Friday. Seriously, there should be a certain age where your drivers license gets taken away. I was traveling in the fast lane on the highway back home, and this 90 year old guy decides he doesn't like the slow lane and does a sharp turn over into my lane, and I had no time to react. He hit me, and I went across the opposing lanes of traffic (thank goodness there were cars coming from the other direction at that moment) and came to a stop in the grass. Jackson was in the back seat, but unhurt. He was just scared and got a little bump on his noggin. I, on the other hand, am black and blue in the areas where the seatbelt sits. Across my chest, one side of my boob is completely bruised, and I have a big welp on my tummy where the lap belt sat. I'm just really sore, and coudln't breathe without it hurting yesterday. I feel a lot better today, but I still can't hardly move.

Besides being bummed about needing yet another car (I just got this one in October, dangit), I'm also real sad about having now to miss my bro's wedding Monday. He said we'll do something special though when I come up next week.

Oh well, I guess the good thing is I'm alive and well and my baby boy wasn't hurt.

OMG, Jojo! Thank heavens that you're going to be fine in a bit of time. Isn't this the second crash you've been in this year? Take it easy, and see if you can get somebody to bring you some arnica montana, 200C, for help with that bruising.

You are so right about the elderly and cars. After a fair bit of begging, I finally got my mother's doctor to send in the form to the Ministry of Transport here to revoke her driver's license, effective immediately. She bought herself a new car in Novemeber, put about 500 kilometers on it, and the rear end is all smashed up. My dad says it's about $1500 worth of damage. It's been a couple of years since anyone in my family would get into her car if she was driving, just scared the living daylights out of us all.

It's a shame that it seems to be too expensive to give oldsters a road test every couple of years, because that would really help illiminate the dangerous ones from driving at all. I understand that it's a terrible blow to their independance, but as I've been telling both of my parents for a few years now, taxis are much less expensive than maintaining 2 cars, not to mention the insurance. And my mother's insurance was higher than if she were a 16 year old boy with a Ferrari, she's had so many fender-benders.

Maybe you should write an article about this problem. It's a biggie, and I am so glad that it wasn't too serious, and that Jackson is okay. All doctors of the elderly should be making evaluations of their patients on a regular basis for their ability to drive. Even the slightest bit of cognitive dysfunction, as in being "pleasantly confused" should be the first thing a doctor would use as reason for cancellation of a license. Not to mention a lapse of judgement, even for a split second.

That old fellow needs to be taken off the road, ASAP!

Thanks, girl. I have to head up to town tomorrow to get some things out of my car at the tow place, so I'll stop in for some arnica montana. I'm game for anything. These bruises are really painful!

The guys grandson in law came out to the waiting room at the hospital to check on me and Jackson and said they've been trying to take his keys away for a long time. I told him that they definitely should after this incident.

Yeah, my other accident was in October, when the homeless guy hit me and totaled my car. At this this dude has insurace, or so I've been told. The guy at the towing place told my dad that the damage didn't look very bad, so they might be able to fix the car. I'm crossing my fingers, because I just put about $500 worth of work into the car. HMMPH.

I agree about them feeling like their losing their independence. My mom works with the elderly, and they get so upset when they can't do things for themselves anymore. But there comes a time when they shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel! You all seem very serious about getting your mom's license revoked, and I applaud that.

We have a section of our paper called Active Age, and I'm going to suggest a story on this very subject.

See, that's the problem with kids trying to get the old ones to stop driving. It needs to be done through a doctor, because that way, there's no arguing about it. People beyond a certain age, and I recommend 80, should need a doctor's okay before reapplying for a licence renewal. There would have to be a test of both cognitive and physical abilities, done by their family physician every other year. And if they don't get close to 100%, then sorry, but no more driving.

We had a terrible time when my mother-in-law had to stop driving. She was furious because my s-i-l had to do it as in Kansas at the time, there wasn't any medical form for the doctors to fill out and send in. It was left up to family, and what a row that caused.

And I remember one time when I lived in California, some ancient old guy in a parking lot at Payless, smashing into about 4 cars trying to get parked. I left my name and phone number on the windshields of the damaged cars and within a couple of days, a policeman showed up at my door asking me to identify the old man, and when I did, he said they'd been trying to get him off the road for 3 years. He was 94. Ridiculous!

My mom tells me she has a terrible time trying to get the doctors to sign papers to not allow them to drive anymore. We definitely need some changes in the system, that's for sure.
My grandmother has already warned us not to try to take away her car when she gets up to that point. After my accident though, I hope she changes her tune.

A 94 year old? That's rediculous. It's a good thing you were there to take down the information and help those folks out!

One of the things I found somewhat helpful in getting my mother to accept no more driving was to tell her that now she'll have her own persoal chauffeur all the time, either me, my father or a taxi cab. That she'd earmed the right to let others do her bidding, etc. She kind of liked that.

Not great fun for me, but I hope I'll live long enough to expect my kids to do the same for me one day.

Thanks Shelly. I'm getting better, just resting and taking it easy. Today's a raindy day too,so perfect for a few games of Candyland and Chutes and Ladders with Jackson.

Kae, I told my mom that when she got up there in age, that I'd for sure take care of her every way I could. Sad thing is though, most kids don't want to take care of their parents. She sees it every day at the retirement home.

Hey Jojo, glad you are OK for the most part, hope those bruises heal quickly. The bad thing about accidents is that you end up afraid to drive anymore, you panic whenever someone comes near!

Are you in the flood areas?

JoJo, I'm so very sorry to hear about your accident. It must have been terrifying, especially with Jackson in the backseat. Thank goodness he is alright!

I hope that you feel better, and you have the darndest luck, two accidents within a year. I'll be sending healing thoughts to you!

Thanks, gals. I'm feeling much better already. I'm still real sore though, and am fixin' to pop a muscle relaxer and get in the bed.

Tina, I don't live in the flood areas. I'm about three hours away from it, but we've been getting lots of rain too. It's not been too terribly bad though.

I'm hoping my luck does turn around!

jojo, i'm so glad that both you & jackson are both okay. that must have scared the hell out of you!!

living in FL i definitely agree. anyone over 70 should be retested yearly. if states were creative they could get a computer program that tests reaction time & driving skill. would eat up testers...who are already overwhelmed....time by doing actual on the road testing.

doctors are notoriously resistant to send that letter to the state for some reason. frankly, i don't get it. maybe more of the children should tell the docs when they make the request that if anything happens to the elderly person in question, any paaenger, or anyone they hit.....that they will hold them liable. then make them sign a paper (witnessed) stating that they denied the request from the family member. they'd be signing fast then lol.

Oooh, yeah. I agree about holding docs liable if they've been told about the driving problem, yet don't do anything about it!

How are you feeling now, Jojo? Did you get the car fixed or was it totalled? Anything happen with the old guy that crashed into you?
