I got permission from Nick this morning to post his travel blog which includes videos and pictures, some of which I have already shared with you. He and Laura are now enroute to Saigon and his updates will appear regularly on this site.
Today they're in Nha Trang, then plan on visiting an orphanage before heading to Laos. No posts yet on that boat trip, but he'll likely post something tomorrow.
He emailed us yesterday that now he wants to finish his MBA in Bradford, UK. Well, it's just for one school year, and it is more civilised than SE Asia, I guess. GAH! Why can't these darn kids stay put?
Just the middle one and the youngest like travel. Tony, who is settled and married with a child and another on the way, is more prone to MOVING to places far away as they did when they lived in Paris a year ago. But they did come back, thank goodness.
I suppose it IS a good thing for them to see the rest of the world, but then again, Mike told me he almost joined that gypsy company in Frankfurt, the one where he lived in the Mongolian yurt. He said he almost wrote to me that he was dropping out of school to join the circus, and that didn't make me laugh. He came to his senses, though.
As for Tony, I think they like all the free babysitting they have here, lol!
Nick and Laura are now in Hanoi, love it there, but still no new posts. He emailed us that he's bought suits! Now where does he expect to be wearing those, I'd like to know. Could this be a good sign?
He hasn't posted anything since August 10 but I've had a few emails from him. They're in Laos now.
Nick wants to go to the University of Bradford near Leeds, UK, for his MBA. I assume the suits are for something related to his business degree - I can only guess. If you knew Nick, you'd really laugh at this; it's is a huge departure for him, LOL.
Nick's been thinking a lot about his future and is almost done with this vagabond life. I really got the impression that he'd be happy to wrap up the trip within the next few weeks, by Christmas anyway. He's talked about driving out to BC to teach either snowboarding or skiing for the ski season, then back to school next September.
Mike just got his contract from U of T for teaching Spanish and he's really happy about it. He is paid a decent living wage and has free tuition for the PhD stuff. Things are looking up!
All that sounds so great! I really hope your boys find what they're looking for, and continue to do well. And I know you'll be happy when Nick is done traipsing around the world! LOL.
When he starts getting his biz degree in the UK, is it something he's likely to stick with?
We recieved a call about 2 and a half hours ago fron Laura to tell us that Nick was in hospital in Vietniane with pneumonia. He'd come down with an illness a few days ago in a small tourist town after rafting in a river, and the thing capsized. He took in a good bit of the river water.
I googled the hospitel number and sent it to Tony, fluent in French. He called and spoke to Nick. He's on the mend, thanks to an ambulance ride to the capital city of Vietniane and some decent antibiotics. Insurance is the most pressing issue for Laura, poor kid, who has never had to deal with anything like this before.
We advised them to recouperate in Singapore, then take the 9 hour flight to Brisbane. Laura is a complete mess of nerves. Fortunately, Nick's old friend from elementary school was to meet them in Laos, and Laura was having a fit trying to contact him. So I called his dad here in town, and he was in touch within minutes.
All will be well in a few days, but the drama continues.
Nick hasn't updated his travel blog in 20 days while in Laos. He emailed me last night that they were going to catch a train to Bangkok from Laos and then wend their way down to Ko Samui where Mike's (friend from Toronto who joined them in Vietntiane) uncle lives.
Ko Samui is an island off the east coast of Thailand, one that has just recently been taken off the backpacker's destination list and placed in the island paradise category.
He says he's fine, Shelly, and we have no choice but to believe him. I'm not so sure, though. His emails have been one sentence and very terse. It's not like him. We hope that it's a problem with internet cafes in Laos - expensive maybe, so he's economical with words/time.
Nick is now in Ko Samui at the friend's uncle's place, says it is absolutley beautiful. He has several updates to his blog and can now upload them soon. I kind of got the impression Laos wasn't the highlight of his trip so far.
I'm still chuckling about his new suits and shirts - this from a kid who had to have special pants for "Nana visiting", ones that didn't hang off his rear end (for want of a better way to describe that horrible style).
Oh, it's so nice to see him feeling better and his blog updated! I'm glad, and I'm sure you are soooo relieved he is out of that nasty ant-ridden hospital!
Laura posted a guest blog "Theft in Thailand". Her bags were looted during the 12 hour bus ride from Ko Samui to Phuket (no, it's pronounced Poo-ket, lol). Check it out.
The kids are now en route to Singapore with a long layover before catching a plane to Darwin. They have tentative jobs there working on a pearling boat, as deck hands. Pay is adequate at $2500 every two weeks.
oh thank goodness...I was watching the news yesterday and I immediately thought of my husband who was flying home from VA the same day, selfish me didnt even think of your son. So glad to hear that he is okay and wasnt on the plane
