Hey guys, how are you all doing on this great Friday. Its warm here in CT...I just checked and it says 75, which normally isnt bad but this is the first time I have seen the sun all week. So its nice. And compared to the flooding in the rest of the country I will take the heat.
Anyways, today was my last day at work, I will start school Monday. As much as I had begun to hate my job I was sad to leave some of the people behind. Especially because at a place like Electric Boat you cant just pop back in to visit. Anyways we had a little Pizza thing for my last day so it was good.
Now I am off to pay way too much for my school textbooks but since my loan is through the school I have to pay it...I shouldnt complain since CT foots the bill for tuition.
Whats everyone else up to today? Any plans for the weekend
Hi! My husband and I are still reeling from the news of our son, Nick, who is in the hospital in Vientiane, Laos, with pneumonia. His girlfriend called us last night and had a really hard time finding a phone she could use. He's been in the hospital for several days, transfered to the capital city from a small tourist town 2 hours away.
We have to get him home asap and to a tropical disease specialist as we are concerned he may have picked up parasites when his raft dumped in the filthy river and he swallowed a lot of water. But he can't travel for a while - very weak, and he's 8 hours from Brisbane by plane, and he needs to get back there to sell his car and get down to Syndey where he can begin his journey home. And no access to the internet from Laos.
Other than worrying about that, we ran a few errands today, bought Mike some glasses from the Dollarama store (nice stuff in there, and only a buck each) and tried to stay cool - it's a really hot and muggy day.
Ugh, any word on how long it could take to get him coming home started. Oy that is so horrible for you and Nick. I guess the upside is that Laura did manage to call you to give you a heads up. Hopefully he will get stronger sooner so that he can go home.
KaeEll, you must be going NUTS. I'm so sorry... Let's get that child strong enough to travel so that he can come home, and get well. What a disappointing turn of events, after such an amazing trip.
I know that you'll feel a lot better once you have him back on this side of the world, and can watch him improve!

We've been speaking to him every day and he keeps saying he's alright, just needs rest cure. As it turns out, his friend from here that joined him and Laura on Friday night (long story), has an uncle, a refugee from Zimbabwe, who lives on a small island in Thailand. They're going to go stay with him for a little while. Thank god for small coincidences.
An Australian doctor from a clinic in Udong told us that as long as Nick has no open wounds, which he does not, he'd be okay in Laos while resting up. Ordinarily, all travellers in Laos who become ill or injured, are transported immediately to Thailand for treatment, but in Nick's case, he's okay to stay on since all he seems to need at the time is rest and antibiotics. Last night, Nick told us he'd likely be released some time Monday morning.
This is one experience we all could have done without.
Interesting point, the hospital there in Vientiane does not feed its patients. Laura has had to bring food in for Nick three times a day. I have to chuckle to myself when remembering Nick's enthusiasm for seeing Laos because he said it's supposed to have been just like Thailand was 30 years ago. There's something to be said for progress.
