The Amazing Linen Sale

I just got back from the most wonderful warehouse sale of Egyptian cotton bed linens in the bowels of Mississauga (yicky Toronto suburb) with my friend Marilyn, my d-i-l, and little Vanessa. We went there to buy their 600 thread count bed sheets, queen size, for $55 each. Hah, if only!

What we found instead was 1000 count queen sheets for $120 each, and sumptuous bath sheets for $20 each!! Of course, with bargains like that, I loaded up, and now have a cranked back from hauling all my goodies into the house. I can't wait to make up our bed with these. If you follow the washing instructions to the T, these sheets will last a lifetime and get softer with every wash.

And the towels!!! They are those wonderful thick, super absorbant ones like you find in the best hotels and retail in most stores for over $100. This little hole in the wall imports them directly from Turkey and sells them at just a hair above cost, or that's what the Egyptian proprietor told us. He said they only open their doors to the public 4 times a year, advertise only by flyer (and they didn't advertise the 1000 count sheets or the fantastic towels) and come Novemeber, when he opens again, his dusty warehouse will be stacked to the ceiling and sold out completely in a week. I believe him.

Then we stopped off at Marilyn's favourite German butcher shop and had a bite of lunch - goulash soup and the best cup of coffee I've had in years. I'm really tired from chasing my little one around, and I need a huge glass of water after all the salt in the goulash.

I hope OLTL is half decent today because I'll watch it live (I hope I can get through it).

How is everyone's day shaping up?

Is Egyptian cotton softer than U.S. grown cotton?

I got Gabi a cute Fairy outfit for $7.99! That was my splurge of the day

Everytime I hear of eqyptian cotton sheets I always think of that Britney Murphey movie "Uptown Girls" where the guy sings a song about eqyptian cotton sheets. Its quite amusing

Anyways, sounds like you got some good buys. And as comfortable as I am sure they are I think my husband would kill me if I spent 120 bucks on a set of sheets. I guess I will aquire the taste for expensive sheets like that when I am making more money then what we get from the government

Anyways, my day is good. I am really tired but will be off to school here shortly

Hope OLTL is good for you. As much as I love Marcie I dont think I feel up to watching her lose Tommy

I've got OLTL on mute - just can't watch it. Oh - turned on the volume to hear Blair siding with John over the Tommy thing, and how Todd attacked Miles, lol. The big "betrayal".

Shelly, if you ever make it up here for a visit, I'll be sure to put you in the guest room with the good sheets. Once you've slept on them, you'll never want to sleep on anything else, guaranteed! They are a little slice of heaven.

yeah, then I shouldnt sleep in them. Cause there is no way Vinnie will let me spend that kind of money on sheets. Besides there are no places down here that have such deals

Yes it is, Tina. Something to do with the sunlight, the soil and tha amount of rain or lack of it. But the best woven sheets don't necessarily come from there. In very dry climates where there is a lot of sand and wind, the natives learned centuries ago to weave very tightly to keep the dirt out. Same thing with their carpets.

I was told never to buy high count cottons that are woven in India because they'll shrink. I ignored it and bought some for a fortune, washed them in hot water (big no-no) and then popped them into the dryer on high. Now only my husband has the strength to pull the corners over the mattress. They're still glorious to sleep on, but a total pain in the neck when changing the bed.
