a few months ago, giblette, our elderly pekingese started showing her age. big decrease in activity, food intake & increase in seizure activity. we thought the time was getting close to having to euthanize her. she is essentially sarah's dog. at the same time sarah's friend's dog had puppies. i agreed to let sarah get one. she picked the smallest female.
she arrived yesterday. exactly 8wks old. she is 98% chiwawa....1% daschund. she's really cute.
yesterday went great. quiet in her crate....actually did her business outside x2 lol. ate, but only a little.
today, not so smooth rofl. she wouldn't eat.....i know she will when she gets hungry enough. she hates the leash, but is learning to tolerate it. she woke sarah up twice during the night. right now she's asleep in her crate in the living room b/c she kept whining at sarah (who desperately wanted to go back to sleep hee.).
we've read ooodles of books on house training & training in general. just have to convince hubs that cuddling a whining dog is not to be done!!
i predict a long road ahead.
btw, her name is chloe.

My poodle's name is also Chloe - good choice, n'est pas?
Puppies are a real challenge for the first few weeks, but stick to your guns and she'll be a real treasure before you know it. I won't tell you about the horrors I went through with my Chloe when we first brought her home, but whining would have been a welcomed relief.
When you can, post a picture of the little sweetie. Love, love doggies!
Regarding the big dog versus the little dog argument - We have one of each, and no question about it, the little dog is WAY more trouble than the big one!! Who'd have ever guessed that one? I wouldn't have!
I've had dogs all my life, but mostly the smaller types. When my last poodle passed on into doggie heaven, I called all the breeders in the province looking for a replacement for her, and nobody had any miniature poodles that were available, only standard. So we decided to try a larger dog, and after the first few weeks of a really strange (to us, anyway) behavioural problem, she has been nothing but pure heaven in our house (aside from getting her on meds for the epilepsy).
Now Champ, the Maltese, is another story altogether. He's cost us more in vet bills in the last six years than we ever spent on all of our other dogs combined! And in two weeks, there will be another bill for $450 to have his teeth cleaned. Go figure.
yeah well I want a boxer but the housing I live in lumps Boxers in with the same category as pitt bulls (I think cause their jaws lock) and they require a $100,000 insurance in order to have that dog....so we will have to wait.
A lady at our church has 2 great danes....one of them is 100 punds the other 130 and they are both puppies...thats nuts
Congratulations on the new family member! Puppies are so cute, but so much work! My daughter has a silky terrier, and he is a bundle of energy. I call him my grand-puppy. I puppy sat one afternoon, and it was quite the adventure. His name is Rascal, and he definitely lives up to his name. After Sabrina took him home, I took a nap, I was exhausted.
I also agree about the large dog verses small dog. My Tess is a breeze, most of the time I don't even know that she's around. She came house broken from the pound, and has never really caused me any anguish after she got over her neurotic chewing phase.
My Dutchess, was always a very demanding spoiled girl. Tess is very spoiled also. Dutchess would sulk and go find something to get into if she did not get her own way, which basically meant that she had to be on my lap, or in my arms. If she got mad enough at me, she would pee on the rug, right in front of me. She had me very well trained, and we shared an incredible 16 1/2 years together.
I'm afraid of saying this, because you all might kill me. The dog we just got is a Maltese and poodle mix, and she has been perfect. Now I will admit that she is 1 and we got her from some people who just weren't that great to her. She's potty trained perfectly. We only have to tell her to kennel up and she goes right to her kennel (unless she gets distracted on the way I think she has add). She's great with the kids, and the only gripe I have is that if she gets out when we're not home she makes a total mess, oh and she's an angry pooper. When Cody left for camp she pooped in his room out of spite, and any time he goes somewhere without her, guess where she heads. Yeah so we've started closing his door when he goes out to play lol. Oh and she likes to escape out the front door and run around the neighbor hood before coming home. It scares the poop out of me, but at least she always comes back. She knows how to push the screen door open. She's too darn smart lol.
Oh kris!! What a cute little puppy! Thanks so much for posting the pic.
Now, onto my treatise on Maltese dogs! Jess, just watch the teeth. Maltese (and mine is also half poodle) have a huge tendency to develop dental problems, and even if you brush their teeth every day, it can still happen. It's expensive getting them cleaned.
As for their intelligence, well, yeah, they are to some extent but it's always self-serving, so if they have a goal in mind, they'll figure out a way to reach it. Just don't expect your Maltese to do anything just to please you because they don't do loving things for their masters, unlike Labs or Alsatians or poodles and spaniels (the only other breeds I've had long term personal experience with. I'm sure there are many others).
I'm not suggesting that they aren't loveable, and they do love to cuddle up, but they're self-centred little buggers.
Lol I'll keep all of that in mind Kae thank you. Oh since you've had them, are Maltese (well mixed with poodle) normally well, I don't know how to sum her u p.... goofy. She is certainly the most goofy dog I've ever seen, and protective of the kids. Wow! I had to shut her up in my room when the delivery guy brought my fridge over. He's a friend of the family so he would occasionally talk to Aiden or Bethany and play w\them, and she was so agitated. I'll have to post a pic of her on here. I've recorded her chasing her bottom today. She was in such a goofy mood. Actually I do need to post that pic so I can be for sure if she's part maltese. I mentioned we got her from another family, well, they are looking for her papers right now but they said she was part something that started with an m and part poodle. I could be wrong on what her breed really is. All I know is she was originally a 600.00 dog which we got for free (unless you count the price price of gas for picking her up). SHe's already spayed and everything, we don't have to take her to the vet until january. Oh an one other thing. Does anyone know much about beagles, we've considered getting one for Cody since we now have the room, but I'm not sure how they are as pets.
Jess, I wouldn't say 'goofy" so much as frenetic - my Maltese has tons and tons of energy, so much so that I have to use a homeopathic "off-switch" on him some nights just so we can enjoy a TV show without the ottoman (on casters) flying across the room as he bounces all over the place. The poodle just carefully steps away and curls up on her bed down the hall.
I'm looking forward to the picture of the little pup. She sounds like a Maltese to me. When she was upset with the fridge guy, it was her territorial nature kicking in. She probably already thinks of your children as HER toys, lol.
she's only had a few *accidents*....sarah has been very good about taking her out. only real problem is getting her to settle down & eat. it's the ADHD distractibility thing rofl.
oh & she loves to chew.....on my favorite blanket, sarah's & my shorts ~~~ fingers. she has a chew toy so we're working on the distracting tactic.
