I realise that only a couple of you have any need for these things at the moment, but my son and d-i-l want me to get one for my car as their second child is due any week now - due date is Novemenr 9, but this little guy looks like he wants out asap.
Anyway, I need one for a child under 40 pounds. The infant seats can be easily moved from one car to another, but the toddler ones have to be bolted in and checked by police before using. So far the Britax Roundabout seems to be the best, but the darn things cost around $350.
Any advice on this purchase? We want safety, of course, AND easy buckling-up. Britax has this awkward tightening gadget I have a bit of a hard time with.
Thanks, Tina. The closest Target is an hour south of me in Buffalo and the border crossing is such a pain in the neck now that I don't bother with it any more. I used to love it when we travelled to New Hampshire all the time when Tony was in school there in Hanover. The local Target was my first stop before even seeing my son. I miss Target, sniff, sniff.
The kids went to Sears last night and came back empty-handed. So far, we're stuck with the Britax.
Kae do you have a Baby's R Us near you anywhere? If not have you looked online. A lot of places will ship something like that for free since it is over a certain dollar amount.
Thanks so much, Shelly! Yes, we have a Costco card in the family. Great idea! No baby r us, but ToysRus has a section for little ones' gadgets. I'll try there too.
If you lived closer and had asked me about 2 weeks ago I would have just given you mine. I gave it away. And I believe it was a Graco. They are good, make sure the one you get has that 5 point harness thing
I'd truly love to help you out with this one, KaeEll, but I'm afraid that not only can I not remember what brand of carseats we used for our three, I'm also quite certain that they wouldn't be available for purchase anymore! LOL...

I'd also say buy online. We bought a convertible type of car seat as well as the actual carrier. That way we can use the carrier and then strap that into mom's car etc... and also use the convertible now that he is heavier. I got our convertible one from Wal Mart. We saved a ton and it is very nice. It even comes with the special foam insulation instead of just the plastic. Oh and i just saw a britax for 269.99 on Toys R Us also ... ummm I'm trying to find the web sites we searched before buying what we got. Oh you know if your son and daughter in law are using a carrier kind for now, you can buy an extra base to put in your car, and until he or she is big enough to go into a forward facing car seat, that'd be the easiest thing to do. Toys R Us has the spare bases, that's what my mom did.
SO anyways here are a few of the car seats we looked into. car seat
We have this one ... I love it it's so cute and matches all of the stuff we have lol. It's easy to take apart and clean too, which is so good when it comes to these things
Thanks again, Shelly. And thanks a ton, Jess. What a selection!!
About 3 years ago a law was passed in Ontario that all kiddie seats had to have this and that, blah, blah, and the 5 point harness was one of them. And then before you put the child in it, a policeman has to give it the A-okay. So after my son installs it for me, I'll have to drive to the local constabulary and drag some poor over-worked copper out to my car. At least they do it for free.
Two weeks ago, my d-i-l wasn't into that burst of energy and "get things done" mode that usually happens a couple of weeks before delivery. She's in it full steam now, lol. She's knocking off tasks from early morning until she collapses into bed at night. I'm getting quite a chuckle out of it.
I don't think this new baby boy will wait until his official due date, but I've been way off before, so we'll have to wait and see. I'm really excited!! The big question is will she be able to VBAC. Now the news is saying doctors are advising against it but just a few months ago it was encouraged. It's got to be tough on the moms with all the conflicting advice.
yeah here it isnt required to have the car seat looked at but if you go to the fire department they will usually do an inspection for you. Its nice. Jess is right, it may be easier and cheaper for now to just buy the base for the car seat. Though you mentioned laws and it may be easier law wise to just buy the whole thing. Anyways, hopefully we were able to help you save some money.
Yeah, your advice was great. None of my friends here have little ones yet, except of course for their grown children, but my son was the first to marry and reproduce, so I'm stuck for outside advice. I need a bargain.
We just paid the vet $715 yesterday for Champ's dental work. Unbelievable! Gah. Jess, if you're reading this, did I tell you that Maltese tend to have problems with their teeth? And that it can be expensive?
Yup I remember you saying that. I really hope she has more poodle in her than Maltese. So far we took her into the vets and he's given her a clean bill of health, but at the same time, she's only a year old. We make a point to always get the chewy food, because I don't want to damage them. I am a bit paranoid lol.
It's such a shame there isn't a Wal Mart near you. We got the chocolate colored car seat for Beth and then transitioning for Aiden from there. It was unbelievable expensive every where else, but we paid eighty dollars for it. It's so nice and not very confusing at all. if you need to adjust the harness you pull on the strap at the bottom and then just arrange away. Once you're done you push the little clicky thing over the strap back down (don't you love my jargon) and you're done. Latch devices are wonderful too. All cars come with them now. It makes the car seat a million times safer. If anything at all should happen and the regular seat belt would fail, then the latch anchors the car seat down.
Man I tell ya, this board is so helpful. I swear if I ever have a question about something its almost guaranteed that someone here will have an answer.
Jess, there are Wal Marts all over my city. It's Target that isn't up here. My shopping guru friend is on her way down here (from a suburb) on Monday to take me to Costco. I can use her card. My son has one but he'd have to come with me and he's a bit busy these days.
Tina, if your dog needs to have his teeth cleaned, I recommend that you get it done before there's any gum disease. We were told a year and a half ago that Champ needed it but my husband thought that it was stupid for a dog to get its teeth cleaned. He's sorry now, because a simple cleaning is only $90, plus the anaesthetic (that part was a bit over $200).
See if the dog likes those chewy rope toys. I was told to get some in for Champ. Not raw hide - abrasive rope ones. If he doesn't like it, pour some consomme soup concentrate on it for flavour.
before buying anything i would check w/the local police/fire department for recommendations since that's who checks to make sure they are installed properly.

As it turns out, a fact I learned late yesterday afternoon, we can only buy car seats here that have already been approved by the government. If, say, I went to Buffalo and got one at Target or Wal Mart, they wouldn't have the Canadian sticker on them and if I tried using it and got caught - big huge fine and possible other unpleasant consequences. And never mind if there were an accident (God forbid), the insurance company would take a particularly dim view of it.
So, thanks all so much for all the advise! I can still get the brand names you've recommended, but I have to buy them here with the "blessing" of the sticker and then the police or fire department for approval of the installation.
Every once in a while the police DO that. When my son had to get theirs installed in a big hurry (Vanessa came 6 weeks early) the police had set up an installation workshop at a local car dealership, all for free. That was a lucky break!
I don't know if it's the same up in Canada, but we can take ours to the fire department and they will install it correctly for us, and show what we've done wrong.
I think that my son and d-i-l have decided upon the Evenflo child seat for my car. They're going to Toy R Us later today, and if it's satisfactory, they'll have the store set it aside for me to go buy tomorrow.
Thanks all for the advice and help! What an ordeal, lol.
Yay you have a winner lol. You know, they should have people at the store to help you install your car seats and show you how to take them apart for cleaning and how to adjust the straps.
speaking of baby items, I'm about ti go nuts. We have a little saucer type thing for Aiden it's by baby trend, and I'm trying to clean out the cloth seat in it. I got the seat out but there's still a big thing it's attached to. I don't have the manual so I don't know if this piece comes off or how it would grrrrr there's nothing on their web site
All done! We bought the Evenflo Triumph at Toy R Us and the guys installed it yesterday afternoon. I have to wait until tomorrow to book an appointment with the police for inspection, but the guys did a great job of getting it in place, no easy feat, either. It takes a lot of strength to get it in there as snuggly as it must be.
Yesterday was a bit tense! Ted and I went to our son's house to babysit bright and early so the two of them (son and his wife) could go for one last ultrasound (midwives ultrasound moms SO often). Anyway, the young eager-beaver techie kid insisted that my daughter-in-law was dilating and sent her up to labour and delivery on a stretcher. Six hours later, she was back home, same as ever, but during the time in the hospital, no one knew whether she was going to deliver that day. Talk about "covering your backside" medical care. Sheesh.
Anyway, we are now officially on call for the dash over to their house to stay with Vanessa when the real time comes for delivery of the new baby. I'm relived to have the car seat in place so that I can bring my little one back here with me and can get things done at home. Nothing like playing dolls and leggo for 7 hours straight when there's a pile of laundry sitting at the base of the stairs at home.
I have a feeling that this new little boy will come before Halloween. He's as impatient to join us as was his big sister. Will keep you posted.
