Rainy Sunday!

Oh, it's so cozy with the pouring rain outside! I woke up to a rumble of thunder that went on for five minutes...

My husband is working on a deadline, and is already exhausted; not much sleep. I wish that he could enjoy this quiet day, curled up with a good book, and hot mug of tea. Not fair!

I'm going to do a little baking (after I finish reading my usual Sunday morning newsletter from Joggles.com), and our son will come over for dinner and to watch the last in the John Adams HBO series with us tonight. I think that I may do a pork tenderloin, some polenta (which he loves), and I'm not quite sure which veggie yet.

I hope that everyone is having a lovely morning, no matter what your weather happens to be!

It's gorgeous here again today - payback for that awfully long winter I guess. Not complaining!

Ted's busy with an environment day, taking Styrofoam and metal (the old blown-up BBQ) to High Park, then stopping by Home Depot for some under padding as the carpet guy is supposed to come in the morning at 9. We shall see, lol. Then he promised to attack the telephone problem.

I'm bumming around but will have to shift into gear as my parents and Mike are coming for dinner at 6. Kabobs, rice pilaf, roasted peppers.

Moore, try some roasted zucchini with the polenta. Just cut them up, stick in a roasting pan, drizzle with XV olive oil and some basil, roast for 45 minutes at 375. I throw on a little coarse sea salt too. Or some roasted different colour peppers, same deal. Or, put them all together. The savoury polenta really goes well with the "Italian"veggies.

The next door lady came by last night canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society and in idle chit chat, I let it slip that I found the kids across the street vile. Her jaw dropped. I chuckled to myself as she's one of those mincers that wouldn't let butter melt in her mouth, Not my cuppa tea, to say the least. Those kids, generally referred to around here as whelps, are the loudest, rudest little monsters ever. The parents are responsible, of course. I won't go into what I think of them, LOL. That one family has chased away three sets of next door neighbours in the 7 years we've been here. Pretty remarkable. I said that I preferred the skill saws and the Johnny-on-the-Spot at their house renovations to the racket those kids create, and was dreading their return after a 7 month hiatus. *snort*

Tony e mailed us a photo of him and Nick at Squaw Valley. Tony and Nick, Squaw Valley, Saturday, April 19, 2008

Great picture of the brother bonding in the snow together! It must take you back to the days of building snowmen!

My son loves zucchini, and I may consider that! We love those wonderful little baby ones that can be quickly sauteed in olive oil, and garlic. That's a good suggestion, KaeEll... The last time he was here, we had asparagus (at his request), so the zucchini would be good.

I'm being very lazy today after not sleeping all that well, and in my attempts to recover from cleaning out that turtle tank. Ugh! I really do have to get my fanny in gear, though.

KaeEll, my husband and I were just recently horrified by a child in our neighborhood, and it's really sort-of disconcerting. We had the most wonderful neighbors across the street from us, for many years. They raised three kids, boy-boy-girl, all three of whom turned out to be extraorinary people, and very successful, in different fields. The oldest is a businessman (with three kids), the middle son is a lawyer (three kids, and one on the way), and the daughter is a doctor (two kids).

Anyway, the younger son (lawyer with 3-1/2 kids) bought his parents' house about five or six years ago, and we were thrilled because it was such great continuity, and it meant that his parents would be around the neighborhood quite a lot. Well, his wife is VERY laid back about raising the kids (and John isn't home much because of career demands) whereas her in-laws had suffered no nonsense when raising their three! The first two children are twins (a boy and a girl), and the pregnancy was really a difficult one; she was hospitalized for several months. The third child is a little girl, and the one on the way is another little boy. The two little girls are adorable, but the little boy is turning into an absolute hellion! He'll be four next month. When my husband and I were outside the other day, and visiting with them in their front yard, the little boy was behaving absolutely monstrously, and the mom appeared to be entirely oblivious to it all. I really do adore this entire family -- our former neighbors, all three of their kids, all of the grandkids, etc., etc., and I know that our former neighbors must be really upset at seeing this with their little grandson.

I don't think that I have ever seen this little boy smile. He's always looking suspicious, is ready to cry, is already crying, or is in the process of throwing a tantrum. I'm really worried that, if this isn't addressed soon, he's going to grow into a very angry person.

Hi ladies! It was beautiful and warm here yesterday, but the clouds have returned, and it's chilly once again. We're supposed to get some rain today. Better than snow! I spoke to my friend up in Alberta, and they got dumped in snow again. I just hope it doesn't move down this way.

Not doing much today...my house is pretty much clean, laundry is done. I just have some stuff to do in my room. I'll watch a NASCAR series race today, and try to catch highlights of Danica Patrick's Indycar win on the net or sportscenter. I really wish I coulda watched her win last night.

I'd like to go to the park again today, but I think the rain may put a damper on it! Poor Jackson. He'll be stuffed up in the house all day. Which can only mean a destroyed bedroom. Sigh.
As for dinner, I don't have anything elegant planned, LOL. I promised Jackson I make up some hamburgers.

Nice pic of the kiddos Kae! How's Nick been since he's been home?

Moore, I sympathise, big time. It is one thing when lovely young people raise a little beast, but quite another when the parents are already horrible. Those kids never stand a chance.

Sometimes it's not the genes, though. We had neighbours where I grew up that had 6 children, and all turned out beautifully except their one and only son. He always was the black sheep, getting into trouble all the time, and he grew up to be a ne'er-do-well.

Jojo, Nick has been a little off since he got back. For one thing, he's grieving over the g/f. They had been constant companions for almost 3 years, and it ended 2 weeks before he came home. He, out of comfort or something, has gone back to chumming about with old high school friends, and one lad in particular I refer to as "that little worm", and with darn good reason. That's the group planning on spending 3 weeks in Europe in May. He promised that right after he gets back from that trip, he's going to settle into a new "real" job. As I predicted, existential angst has taken hold of him. He's got a month's grace for that, then I'll get out my cast iron skillet, lol.

I'm off to the grocery store for some supplies, then scooping some doggie treats from the back grass. Trade your turtle tank task, Moore?

Oh my, he's leaving again on another adventure? He just can't sit still, can he?! I'm afraid I wouldn't be as patient as you...I wouldn't wait a month to bust out the cast iron skillet, LOL. Here's hoping he sticks to his promise once he gets back from Europe!

Well hello ladies. Today was another not so wonderful but kind of eventful nonetheless kind of day. We woke up relatively early and hung around the house waiting on the call from my sister's boyfriend to tell us that she was wheeled into surgery. So we left and got to have breakfast at IHOP, a favorite of mine because of their stuffed french toast (you guys see why I joined weight watchers?) and then were off to the hospital again. My sisters surgery was a little over 2 hours long...Turns out she shattered part of her elbow. Plus the doctor said that he doesn't see very often people who manage to break both their elbow and their wrist at the same time. Only my sister.

So we were stuck in the waiting room there for a couple hours with the two girls so by the time we got to see her both were ready to bounce off the walls. And Hailey flipped out again upon seeing her mom all layed up. So we took the kids to that evil place Chuck E Cheese. Evil but an easy way to entertain the kids, especially with the rainy weather that Moore mentioned.

Also found out just a little bit ago that the woman who killed Kayla (the little girl whose name is in my ribbon) was let free by the jury...So that just stinks.

Kae, those vegetables you spoke of sound divine...I am going to make them when I restart my diet this week...and I sure hope that life with Nick gets back to normal sooner rather then later. And Moore asparagus sounds really good too.

I'm taking a brief break from cooking...

JoJo -- there's nothing wrong with a destroyed bedroom. Let Jackson do what he needs to do for his developmental pleasure, unless Architectural Digest is sending a photographer tomorrow! One winter, my kids were so nuts from having been kept inside that I let them play outside on the first warm day. My son, all bundled up in a thick coat, literally sat in the lowest part of our yard, that just happened to become a mud puddle every year, and splashed in the mud. Our neighbors must have thought that I was completely NUTS (maybe I was), but he had so much fun, and a bath fixed everything!

KaeEll, I went with the baby zucchini. Thank you for the suggestions! My husband and I love peppers, but our son isn't terribly enthusiastic about them; I'll save the sliced zucchini/confetti pepper combination for next week when it's just the two old folks! YUM!

Shelly, I'm so sorry about your sister's hand and elbow. How awful for her! I do hope that she's on lots of pain meds right now... Will she need to have pins put in?

The ONLY way I prepare asparagus now is in the microwave. I've tried all of the traditional methods (peeling the stalks, and putting them upright in a LARGE pot; steaming them; roasting them; sauteeing them in butter; etc. etc., etc...

If you snap off the bottoms, rinse them several times, and then put them into a glass pie plate (or something equivalent in size that's microwavable), the leftover water is enough moisture to ensure that they cook properly. I usually place a little Cling Wrap over them, or a paper towel, and then ZAP in one-minute increments until I'm satisfied. Then, I melt butter in a pan, and coat them just before serving. Add salt to taste, and you've made lovely asparagus in just a few minutes!

Pie plate, NOT pit plate!

moore do you think that if I use olive oil it will work as well as butter....As soon as I get home I am going to cut out the animal fats again...

Sharon shouldn't need pins. Good Lord I hope not. The surgeon said he wanted to start moving her elbow in a couple of weeks.

Just got finished watching the tail end of Desperate housewives and am afraid I missed a good part of the movie.

I am so beat from the long day but at the same time really want a little more ME time before heading to bed.

Good news about your sister, and not needing pins. I am SO glad to hear this!

Olive oil will work just fine with the asparagus; just cook it in the microwave until it's ALMOST done, then finish it off in a pan with the bottom coated in hot olive oil (medium high heat) with whatever else you like (lemon juice, garlic, herbs, or none of the above), and salt just before you serve it.

YUM!

(I am SO tired of making these typos!)

Late night HI! Ted's off to bed, the dishwasher's on, puppies are curled up, I'm ready for bed.

Shelly, good news that there are no pins involved. Poor Sharon, and poor YOU! Dealing with the two little ones with no notice and all. Such is life, non?

Dinner was delicious and I was surprised my mother ate so much. At 84 pounds she doesn't look as if she eats much, but she packed away Camembert and biscuits, then all of her dinner, plus dessert. I laced the strawberries with Grand Marnier, heh, heh. She loved it.

Sleep tight all. Pleasant dreams!
