Best Mothers' Day present I ever received was a music box from my own mother. Inside it says "Always my daughter, and now too, my friend". It always brings a tear to my eye.
Also, there are lovely Mothers" Day plates from Royal Copenhagen, each with the year on them. I'll take a photo of my collection for you. They're a real treasure!
Flowers, gift cards (especially an American Express that can be used anywhere), lotions and potions from Bath and Bodyworks, a gift certificate for a pedicure, a gift certificate for a 30 minute massage (everyone can use a little relaxation), an invitation to take them both to brunch, I always love gift cards from Borders, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc., but I don't know if the mothers are readers, um..... a beautiful shrub for their gardens/patio pots.
If you want to do a craft thingy, I have an idea. Invite them out to tea, and as a little "invitation" you can buy an individual antique tea cup -- you know the kind I mean... or an individual fancy tea cup from a current china collection. Fill it with floral foam (round off the top), and glue little tiny dried rosebuds all over the top of the green foam. Cover all of that with floral moss. Make a card (glue it to a toothpick), and stick it down in the middle of the roses as a Happy Mother's Day greeting, or write the invitation to tea on the card.
I don't have anyone to buy for, so I haven't given this a lot of thought lately!

would you believe they both hate flowers... I really can't even explain it. Neither of them would use the items from bath and body works, nor would either go for a manicure or pedicure. Again, I can't explain it, I just have experience....
I got my mom a gift card at Carson's (Boston Store) and she will probably complain that she never has time to go there... Got my mother in law two shirts and a necklace to match, my guess is, she will exchange them!! Tis the thought that counts right!
I will be taking my mom out for breakfast, she says she hasn't had a good "skillet" in a while. My mother in law will at least pretend to like her gift. My husband usually buys her golf balls, she's 81 and totally into golf. But I think golf balls are lame cuz she can buy those for herself, ya know.
Anyway, appreciate all the helpful tips. I would love all of those BTW! I am easy to buy for. I'm one of those people like likes to be pampered and go out for lunch, and I like sappy cards, etc. My mom and I are about as opposite as two people could ever be.
She actually complained that I got her a manicure for my wedding, I paid, and she complained. "I have no reason to want to look nice, but I'll do it for your wedding"
