Bran, have you looked at any of the hybrids? We're thinking of a Prius (sp??) when we dump Ted's gawdawful mini van. You have a highway commute to work, don't you? The hybrids apparently pay for themselves in a couple of years in gasoline savings alone (according to son Tony).

I wish I could afford a hybrid car, I figure if I get rid of my Isuzu and downsize to a car then I will be doing better for the economy then I am now. Vinnie wants a big old truck. I think he is nuts

Yeah we've seen a lot of good things available and we've put together 750 for a down payment so I think we can get something decent enough. I WISH I could afford a hybrid, hell I'd be all over it, but who knows.

Guess they're in Colorado Springs, not gonna drive that far to get a used vehicle.

Brandon, take a look at the Ford Focus. When we needed to buy our oldest daughter her car, we got her a Focus, and she still has it, and she LOVES it. Great mileage too!

We didn't buy her a used car, but we bought her a new car that was an older model. At about the same time, we decided to get rid of our SUV, and get a different car for my husband. He bought himself a Focus -- bright red -- and got himself a custom plate. It said "My XKE". LOL...!!!

Last year, he traded his red Focus, which had a manual shift, for a way cute Mazda Miata convertible, but that had to do with his spinal surgery, and the fact that he wasn't supposed to use a stick shift any longer. If it hadn't been for that, I'm sure he'd still have his Focus...

Anyway, take a look at those. You could get a new 2005 or 2006 for a good price, and they're wonderful cars. Very comfortable for their size.

Our son has a Honda Civic, and he loves that too! Also great mileage.

Our youngest daughter has a VW Jetta, and she loves it. It has taken her back and forth from Virginia to Arizona many times, and has held up quite well...

Good luck with the hunt. It's always very painful to have to consider the purchase of a new car, but sometimes it's just inevitable. Keep us posted!

The Ford Focus does get good mileage, but from what I've seen, they don't hold up too well in accidents. I've written an estimate on many (It's sort of Ford country up here), and I've totaled out many newer model Focus's. I mean, they are inexpensive but it seem with how much people up here use their vehicles, they don't hold value superbly well.

I'd say if you were deciding between say, a Focus, and a Honda accord, I'd go with the Accord. But that's just my personal opinion. We have a lot of Focus's and Ford Fusions on the street up here. People up here love them, as well as the pickup trucks. This part of the area is heavily depenedent upon their trucks and suv's, so even with the gas prices, it's not affecting the sales of those vehicles much up here.

Good luck with the car shopping though!
