Friday Again!

Happy Friday everyone!

We've had a busy week with visitors, appointments, Ted working at home and GORGEOUS weather, not too hot at all. We only had the AC on once all week.

It's a usual Friday this week for me but I'll be back home by 2.

What's going on with you guys today?

(Shelly, I didn't even watch Y&R yesterday because of guests and me getting a bit weary of the stories. I caught 10 minutes of my recording then erased it.)

No worries about Y&R, its odd that I am watching bot AMC and OLTL over it these days. A little too much gloom.

Its pretty warm today, already 75 and only 10 in the morning. I dont have much planned. We are headed into NYC tomorrow to see the sites so today is kind of about resting up. Have a good day Kae

Jim is home for a couple of weeks, so he's doing his own thing, mostly down in his dungeon office, and I'm enjoying the fact that I don't hurt anymore! The meds seem to be doing their thing, and my stamina is coming back. That entire experience just totally SUCKED! I'm debating whether to go to a doll workshop tomorrow (not too far away), and I think that I might actually feel up to it. I can always leave early, if I need to.

Shelly, I hope you have a great time in NYC. What made you decide to go? Are you taking all the little ones, or is this a little break for the parents?

One of the nicest things my sister ever did for Jim and me (well, she did MANY sweet things for us, but this was certainly one of them) was to babysit our firstborn overnight, when she was still really little. Jim and I booked a room in a beautiful downtown hotel, and because we were staying during the weekend, the rates were much lower. We slept!! We read. We went to see a movie without worrying... We ate with two arms free, not trading the baby back and forth, while scooping food with the other hand. We had fantastic food delivered to the room. And the best part is that we were still only fifteen minutes away, just in case anything unexpected came up, and we were needed back home in a hurry.

Once you guys move down to Virginia, and have family nearby, maybe you can try a similar get-away. Just one night is all it takes to restore your strength and sanity a bit! It doesn't have to be fancy, just quiet...

Moore, so glad that you're on the mend. Take it easy, please!!

T&K brought home their new Ford Flex today. It's BIG, lol.

Ted finally left for his downtown office so I have the house to myself for a blessed couple of hours.

Shelly, have a fabulous time in NTC. Where are you staying? Be careful, because some of the hotels in midtown are plagued with bedbugs and they still get away with charging $165 a night.

Well we aren't staying the night. We are taking the train from New Haven, CT into the station and are going to see as much as possible in one day and then head home tomorrow night. Vinnie is not going, he has never had the urge to see "the city" before so he is staying with Jolene and the twins. A friend from church will come and get the twins for a few hours so that Vinnie can take Jolene out and have 1 on 1 time with her. He hasn't really done that since the twins were born. I think he is taking her mini-golfing.

We went to the little man made lake on the base today. Had a slight scare with Jolene because she went too far, have definitely decided that with as much as she likes water she needs to learn how to swim. Good thing I was smart enough to not go by myself. I have her signed up for a class on the 3rd but I think I will continue doing back to back classes until she knows how to swim...

Anyways, I got just a small amount of sun, thank goodness for solarcaine. Moore I am thrilled to see you able to pop in and say hello. The doll workshop may actually make you feel a little better.

Enjoy NYC! I haven't been up there for many years, but it's certainly a fascinating place...

Shelly, it's a really good idea to get Jolene in swimming classes as soon as possible. When they're still young, they think it's great fun to be in the pool, and haven't developed any fears yet. It's much harder when they're older because they don't even want to get their faces wet. If the base pool has any little swim teams, it's a great way to get them fairly advanced with their swimming very quickly. AZ-daughter wasn't all that much into swimming, but her best friend was a real champion swimmer, and my two oldest kids were on our pool swim team. It was essentially free lessons because the coaches helped them work on their strokes so they could perform better in the competitions!

I consider swimming one of those basic skills that everyone needs to know, like typing and driving! In the case of swimming, though, it can save your life...

And another advantage is that Jolene will be tired from jumping in and out of the pool, holding her breath numerous times, playing in the sun, and using a lot of muscles in a different way.

Great idea, Shelly!

Shelly, Moore is RIGHT about swimming being a life skill. If you can take the twins to a mom and tots swim class when they are a year old, please do try to because the sooner they're in the water, the better.

Our kids learned to swim as soon as they were old enough for the youngest classes, 3 at the time. The older they are, the more fear of submerging themselves and the slower the process.

Glad you are feeling better Moore! Like Kae says, please take it easy!

I would have love to get jack swimmng lessons, but he's afriad of a lot of things, and never took well to lessons. They do have lessons as part of the curriculum at school thought, so he knows the basics now.

I was one of those who was terrified of the water, and I'm sure it's because I began swimming when I was older (about eight). It makes a difference! Back in The Dark Ages, when I was growing up, there wasn't an abundance of swim clubs, or communities built around them (were just beginning to, though). A neighbor up the street had a backyard pool, and their daughter taught swimming one summer, so that's when I learned. Scared to death to jump into that deep end, the first time!!

Kids end up feeling so proud of themselves, once they've conquered their fear of water, or any other obstacle they think they can't get past...

Being that I am a swim instructor (and life guard), I definitely agree everyone needs to learn to swim. 60% of people that drown did not intend to be in the water.

An old high school friend of mine has a cottage in Georgian Bay on Christian Island, an Ojibway reservation. One night she and her 2 work crew (reno guys) people were trying to get back to the mainland but missed the last ferry, so they went back to the cottage for the boat to putter back to the parking lot and drive down to Toronto, but the boat sank, mid-lake. She had to swim back to the mainland shore, a good two miles, carrying the one non-swimmer, a man from Estonia who had never learned how to swim, in the lifeguard hold. (Linda, you'll know that hold.) The only reason he survived that ordeal is because my old friend had earned her way through university by life-guarding and teaching swimming all through the summers.

Swimming isn't just a sport, it IS a life skill.

Well she starts classes on the 3rd. And I think I will continue her classes through the winter. The base has an indoor pool and they offer classes throughout the year. That way by next summer she will hopefully able to swim.
