Sunday, March 14 and Daylight Time

Did everyone remember to put the clocks ahead an hour? Ugh, that lost hour, eh? At least we'll have some daylight after the dinner hour for a few months ahead. And it IS better than trying to adjust to a 17 hour time difference as my Mike is here now, lol. His sleep is still sporadic as he tries to adjust. He didn't spend enough time in California this trip on his way home to help much. He regaled us last night with tales of his tsunami evacuation while on the east coast of the north island of NZ the day after the Chilean earthquake. The whole camp ground (lots of little cabins near the beach) was sent up the hill to a Maori meeting place for safety. Later, as they ventured back down, they watched the tide come in and out every 15 minutes. It was creepy, and the water colour had been distorted as the energy of the shock wave stirred up the bottom of the ocean. The next day, while feeding the manta rays (yeah, same kind of shark that killed that Australian dare-devil) the water levels were still crazy, moving up and down from knee depth to waist level in the course of half an hour.

Yesterday we had Tony's clan here for a late tea, then my parents for dinner. A friend stopped by for a glass of wine in the middle of it all too, so there were plenty of dirty dishes and still no dishwasher. We've finally settled on a Kenmore from Sears, lol. After all that... Today is quiet, thank goodness. I stuck a capon in the oven for an early dinner.

Revelstoke, B.C., where Nick was skiing just a couple of weeks ago, lost several people in another avalanche yesterday. I had always worried about the sky diving and bungey jumping the adventurers I bred took up. gah

What's going on in your worlds today?

We did remember to change all of our clocks ahead one hour. I do like the time changes twice a year. I know a lot of people complain about it. Some people just don't like change!

I heard on the news that it was snowmobiles that may have triggered the avalanche.

How do you like your new dishwasher? I hate to be without one. It collects dishes all day. I set the timer to go off in the middle of the night. Dishwashers make dishes more sanitary with the water hotter than can be used to hand wash them. Also, the detergent is stronger than you'd want to use for handwashing everything. Plus its a tremendous time saver!

Well, this afternoon into the evening I go to my new job teaching swimming. I will teach Mondays and Wednesdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays we go square dancing.
Yesterday we played some tennis. The weather was just perfect for it!

My cell phone, the computer and our cable box all change on their own. So thank goodness I woke up Sunday morning with the right time. Although that lost hour in the morning is still kicking my butt. Its hard to be the one who has to wake everyone up. Making things worse is that the weather outside is not sunny at all so it makes me want to stay in bed.

Anyways, just a quick drive by. Think I will go watch last nights Castle. The girls are not happy at the moment. Ugh,

Shelly, we are still addicted to Castle! I wouldn't miss it for anything...

KaeEll, we've had Kenmores in the past, and I've always been happy with them. Congratulations on deciding!

It's been a little crazy around here, so I haven't had much of a chance to post the past couple of days. Our clocks pretty much set themselves, so I didn't pay much attention. It DID hurt to lose that hour of sleep, though!

I'm just looking forward to having spring settle in.

Yay for spring! It's still gorgeous today at plus 10 and sunny.

Here's a store that Marilyn hit in Sarasota the other day. I think I'll end up ordering a few of the things from there. It's hard to find original easy-to-wear clothes that don't cost the earth, so this was a real treat!

The raccoons knocked over our green bin (where we dump organic wastes for collection) last night, made a terrible mess. Chloe was barking like mad at 3 and I couldn't see anything at the time as I stumbled out of bed while Ted was busy sawing logs. Then this morning, there I was, wresting chicken bones from her, calling for Ted who was blithely sipping his coffee. When he finally came on outside to help, poor poodle was already standing on the back porch in disgust at all the commotion, lol. The joys of urban wildlife, AGAIN!

Nothing else exciting. I'm trying to figure out what to serve for Friday dinner when Tony brings his tribe over. The kids have food sensitivities to beef, dairy, gluten, legumes, nuts, eggs and a bunch of different fruits. gah. I was thinking of a lamb curry made with coconut milk but the butcher doesn't have any lamb right now. Pork curry, maybe? What a pain in the a$$. And what the heck for dessert? I was thinking about making a yummy lemon pudding (mostly lemon curd) but that has eggs in it. Cake is out, ice cream a no-no, fruit (some on the okay list) cobbler's an option but with no flour...argh.

I LOVE these clothes!!

Can they have chicken curry?? If they can't have eggs, maybe they can't have chicken either...

I have a lemon ice recipe that doesn't have much in it! Tea is the base, with lemon juice, and sugar. Essentially... If you want to make some of it a little more grown up, you can pour a little white rum over the top. It's in The Joy of Cooking.

Also, I have a nice Meyer Lemon Pudding Cake recipe, although it also has eggs in it. But maybe for some other occasion. I've made it several times, and like it. It also uses buttermilk.

Instead of pouring cream around it, I serve fresh whipped cream, and you can also use regular lemons:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup sugar, divided
4 large egg yolks
1/3 cup fresh Meyer lemon juice
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 large egg whites

Whipping cream
Assorted fresh berries
print a shopping list for this recipe

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 8x8x2-inch glass baking dish. Blend buttermilk, 1/2 cup sugar, egg yolks, lemon juice, flour, butter, and salt in blender until smooth. Transfer buttermilk mixture to medium bowl. Using electric mixer, beat egg whites in large bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually add remaining 1/2 cup sugar and beat until stiff but not dry. Gently fold buttermilk mixture into whites in 3 additions (batter will be runny).

Pour batter into prepared dish. Place dish in roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into roasting pan to come halfway up sides of dish. Bake until entire top is evenly browned and cake moves very slightly in center but feels slightly springy to touch, about 45 minutes. Remove dish from roasting pan.

Cool cake completely in baking dish on rack. Refrigerate until cold, at least 3 hours and up to 6 hours. Spoon pudding cake out into shallow bowls. Pour cream around cake. Top with berries.

Cute clothes, by the way! I should put your friend Marilyn in touch with my friend Liliane, since they're both in Sarasota...

I miss it down there. My sister and brother-in-law lived on Casey Key. Beautiful.
