So much for soaps

So I've pretty much watched my last soap. I stopped watching GH over a month or two ago and frankly don't miss it. 5 hours out of my week I get back.

None of these shows are written, produced, or directed by people that care about putting on a quality product. The story lines have continued to become more and more predictable and more and more ridiculous by the second. There's a certain level of camp or oddball that I can understand. I'll even tolerate a certain level of stupidity from the characters but the sheer idiocy that I'm seeing exhibited by characters that used to have some level of intelligence, cleverness, etc is absolutely ridiculous.

The big over the top is on GH where the writers are trying to make a mobster seem sympathetic and make the cops look bad. I'm sorry, you're a murderer, a womanizer and an asshole but we should feel bad for you because you were beat up by your mom's boyfriend as a child. That excuse only flies so far. And then, your son went to jail because he killed a woman but it's all your cop son's fault because the judge didn't go with the sentence everyone assumed he get. Then your ex you've married 4 times wants revenge for the kid being behind bars. Perhaps you and your jackass friends shouldn't cover up people dying? But did you learn a lesson? Nope, continue on your paths.

And that's the biggest problem. Schemers continue to be schemers and never learn once caught. Bad guys used to get theirs, schemers were out schemed or at least caught and stopped their ways for a bit. But nope, it's like they're afraid to potentially have some sort of badness surround a character.

There are all these shades of grey characters and just repetition of story lines over and over. Same core stuff. It's ridiculous.

Now I can't say anything about CBS soaps being the same way, but I can't imagine it's too horribly different. I just can't invest the time on poor writing and poor execution and this is why the soap genre will die. Because for all their trying, for all the actors working their asses off, they will continue to write bullshit.

So, I'll be hanging around, still chatting with you guys and what not, I'll still up the spoilers as I see them posted but frankly, I don't see myself watching a soap again at this rate. Not when they bring back past actresses/actors to try and "save the soap" or "regain old viewers' but ultimately do nothing new or important with them. And frankly where it concerns Rebecca Budig and Vanessa Marcil, I think there's other motivations going on there and not so much caring about a character or story but having a "hot chick" on the show.

I really enjoyed watching the GH marathon today. Not because of Brenda but because of getting to watch GH back when it was well written. And before it was the Sonny and Carly show. Although sadly it made us all even more aware of how bad this show has gotten.

I have heard that ABC might end up doing another marathon for the other shows. I look forward to it. Old shows are entertaining.
